Special Oil Pump/Distributor Tool Needed
re: 262 / 308 Does anyone have the tool for oil pump installation / distributor alignment available for loan, rent, purchase, reverse engineering or ??
Having a very hard time getting the pump back in & I know it would be a very simple task with tool #J-2794.
Or if there's another way, I'd appreciate your tips.

Set the engine with #1 at top dead center by removing the #1 plug and turn the motor until it blows your finger off the plug hole, and set the long mark on the flywheel to the pointer on the bell housing.
Set your distributor rotor to about 1 o'clock. Check which way the lower end is oriented. Orient the oil pump the same way, back it up a little to allow for the rotation caused by the helical gear, Insert the oil pump and check it with the distributor by rotating until it clicks into the end of the pump. You may be a tooth off so re-do it if you want to.
Actually, it doesn't matter if it is a little off as long as you set the distributor so it fires #1 at this engine setting. I screwed up and have my Hornet #1 firing at 7 o'clock, but as long as the order is 1,5,3,6,2,4 clockwise the motor doesn't care.0 -
Thanks! I'll attack it like that this week!

I set my oil pump/distributor by the above method and was able to do it with little difficulty (the oil pump pulls out quite easily with a little maneuving around after you remove the three bolts). Do have an extra oil pump gasket or two just in case the original is worn out or you distort it in the adjusting process.0 -
I appreciate the tips. Sorry to be slow responding, had been spending evenings getting it back together. Looks like I was one tooth off on the pump, as I have to roll the distributor CCW just past the end of the underside slot but I did get it fired up for the first time since January. Have been waiting 1-1/2 weeks for replacement gaskets from Ace Auto. When they do arrive, I may try this again, because this is a real nice Hornet and it deserves to be correct. This whole exercise started with the oil pump cover seal replacement, using one of Rudy Bennett's rectangular rings.
Sure would be easy if that tool was in the club store! I devised my own pedal puller for floorboard removal if anyone would like to borrow or build their own.
