Thx to everyone for all the info, much appreciated. I had the 52 out today for it's first swap meet\show n shine & first real test run. No problems, ran fine. Few questions tho, does it have a manual choke, can't see one, I pump it a few times and then stay lightly on the pedal till it keeps running, usuall y 1-2 minutes. Also want to do an oil change, it was suggested to use 15\40 diesel oil for the zinc in it. Is this true, also does it have an oil filter, can't seem to see one. Thx Don

If it has a manual choke it's because some former owner has installed one.

If it doesn't run right when starting the auto. choke may need some help.

Lotta opinions on oil, I think any good modern oil will work. I use one of the retro oils that still has a bit of zinc in it but that whole thing may be an old wives tale....hard to tell.

To answer all of your questions in order: (1) Both the Twin H and the single Carter carbs have automatic chokes, (Bi-metal stove type) that draw heat from the exhaust manifold. they are adjustable and should be checked as pre the manual for proper operation. (2) Oil type is not an issue, the % of vinc in todays high quality engine oil is enough to protect a flat tappet big six - I would only use a high zinc oil for protection during a rebuild break-in with a reground cam and new tappets. (3) An oil filter was not a standard item, in most cases it was installed by your Hudson dealer or the aftermarket. It is a "bi-pass" system which only filters a portion of the crankcase oil at any given time when the engine is operating. The unit is installed on the driver side of the engine block forward and above the starter.

    Happy Hudsoning
