I'm not sure which overdrive was put in the car, but it is very long and it is gonna be jammed in there with very little clearance. I would not have advised disassembly of the overdrive itself, that is a can of worms.
The way I got the OD out of my '37 is by simply pulling the entire engine and OD. Yes, you will have to remove the radiator shell and the radiator, as well as the hood. While the shell itself can be tricky to get back on, the hood and radiator come off fairly easily. But once you have disconnected the engine (wiring, throttle linkages, mounts, exhaust pipe) the whole thing comes out rather easily. I pulled the engine, cluth and OD all by myself with one of those rolling hydraulic hoists that I rented from the local rental place, and there was no heavy lifting involved. Then, everything is out where you can get to it.
It would have been an incredible pain to try to fit that transmission to the engine, with the engine still in the car!0 -
I agree with Jon. Take the time to remove the radiator and nose piece. Rent or barrow a portable hoist (cherry picker) and take the whole thing out at once. That way you can repair the clutch and put the trans back together with it out in the open. Much easier than tring to wrestle with it in the car. I've been there and done that. It seem like it will take a long time by taking the front all apart, but it's really the easiest way.

And don't attempt to take the overdrive out first. This is a bench job, and you really need a full workshop manual to tackle this if you are unfamiliar with it. And it's not that difficult to take the nose and radiator off. I have just done on a '36 H8 on my own, and i'm in my seventies
