38 rods in a 37 212 engine
I am wondering if I can put the later rods, Forging #157381 / 157369, in a 37 engine? My 37 rods have a babbitt side thrust surface and the later rods were the width of the crank.
Reason, I want to convert to inserts and cannot do it with babbitt thrust rods.
And has anyone done this and who did you use?

I'm not sure of what you are wanting to accomplish here,BUT, these rods DO NOT interchange. The last 3 digits-381 is for the short stroke-175 engine and the 369/552 rods are for the 212. 369 and 552 rods will interchange but must be all the same weight and balnced as a set of rods. '37 rods are the 552's,which have shims and the 369's are the '38 and later 212/254 rods. Hope this info is helpful.0

The Length of the rods is the same, from crank surface to bottom of wrist pin bushing. I measured them.
If it is a stroke issue it must be in the Crank.0 -
I'm confused! There are no such numbers in anyof the parts books I have. Another case of Hudson using numbers stamped on their parts which do not match with the listed numbers in the catalog. The numbers I have for '38 rods in 5" stroke motor are 155648 and 155649, and these were noted for update to 157363 and 157364. To further confuse, the interchange book says to use 166241 and 166242 which were the rods for '46 -47 sixes, and up to '52 8's. However, having said all that, as Doug says, if you ensure that all the rods are the same weight and height, you can use them as complete sets.

While we're on this, Just what all parts from the later 212 with the dist on top can be used in the early blocks with the dist down on the side ?----BUD0

I have covered this in an earlier W.T.N. article. From '37 on you can swap just about everything, except the camshaft, but remember the timing gears have to be used as a matched pair.

Do you remember which WTN it was Geoff?
Is anyone keeping up to date the Tech Index that Vernon E. Holt started?0
