i am assemling the suspension on my 53 and its seems to have excessive play between the bolt and bushing of this pivot. this is on the bench with out any spring attached. if you thread the bolt into the bushing it is very loose. is this normal or will the play disapper when the unit is all assembled on the car. seems to me when you thread a nut to a bolt they are tight. i have many spare of these parts which were taken of parts cars and they are all the same. did hudson design them this way? its also the same on the top eccentric bushing on the top pivot arm. if these are bad are thay available anywhere? king pins have been replaced. any suggestions would be very helpful

thanks steve

It seems to me that you would not want any play in this area. New parts are available from Dale Cooper I think. See his web site.

The part that bolts to the chassis, the bushings screw on are loose. The bushing must be tight in the A arm so when they are all the way in they lock Is this your question?? Walt.

Walt is right. The outer thread of the bushing should be real tight in the frame, but the inner thread and bolt are quite loose. The play is taken up when the weight of the car comes on them. They are designed this way. Keep them well greased.

walt and geoff. the parts which are loose are described in the pictorial in parts book as a1-16 a1-5, a1-6and a1-29. these pins when screws in to bushing or esscentric and thru the pivots you can feel a lot of play in them.when assemble is installed in the bottom pivot you can feel a lot of movement when u move spindle back and forth. basic question is should this be? or when parts are assembled on car with spring in place will this tighten all up. the pins do not seem worn. i am at a loss on this one on weather to try and get all new ones. if you take a pin and screw it in to the bushing (just the 2 parts) should they be loose? not sure how hudson designed these parts to work but grease was also a huge part of this front end. i will be going back to work on car tomorrow and can take a couple of pictures to show what i am trying to explain if this will help. thanks again guys for the help. i was trying to post a couple of pictures of this rebuild but so far havent managed. steve

It is normal for new bolts like this to have some play in them, it depends on what you consider excessive movement. If there is a lot of movement, you would be able to see evidence of wear on the bolt and bushing threads. If this is the case then it would pay to replace them.

The shop manual gives this on bushing play. "Clearance between pins and bushings is from .012 to .026 to allow for lubrication adjustment and free action".
