"New" Hornet Engine

Jim Kilday

Where will I find a "new" Hornet engine with Twin-H Power and approximately how much might it cost? I don't have a core to rebuild.
I know you can buy a Hornet engine from Uncommon Engineering in Indianapolis for several thousand dollars and your first-born grandson but there seems to be mixed opinions about this particular vendor?
Thanks again.

Fora brief time Dave kostansek was offering crate 308's but I called him and he got out of the business of doing that for what reason I don't know. He may have good cores though. I've gotten quotes on rebuilding engines from Dr. Doug, Randy Maas, and Paul Tormohlen and all came out about $5-6 K
A rebuild kit from Dale Cooper (parts) sets you back $12-1500.00
You may be able to find a machine shop who will do it cheaper however personally I'd be a little reluctant to give Hudson engineering to a non-Hudson person. A shop that doesn't know what it's doing can do a lot of bad and waste a lot of your time.0 -
Another professional HET member is Al Saffran (sp?) in AZ. Whomever it is, I also recommend buying it from a Hudson guy due to product knowledge.0

Jim-
Look at "Smasher"'s post today. Sounds like he's not going to be using his engine, although probably not a 308.
Also, noticed you're in Montana. There's quite a few folks up around the Great NW that could help you. Jim Harmon in OR or the Eshelman's in ID, even up in Canada there's people like Ryan Ankney who could help locate what you need. I'd help, but too far away.0 -
I would NEVER NEVER take a Hudson engine to other than an expereinced Hudson builder. And if you attempt to do it yourself you will need ones guideance even if you are mechanically adept before you take the first bolt out or your gonna find yourself in DEEEP trouble . BUD0

Rebuilding non splasher Hudson engine is pretty much the same as rebuilding any other flat head 6. The real magic is in the preparation and the cleanliness of the rebuild. Granted there is a major loss of knowledge in the machining of Hudson engine blocks and turning components. When I last tested the availability of qualified local talent I was surprised to find a local shop (Central Texas) where there is still a machinist who has 308 engine machining and rebuild experience. The biggest IF in the process is the machinist. The parts are all available NORS and the price is comparable to what you would pay for parts to rebuild a FUARD or CHEBBIE. I am an advocate of using the folks who build Hudson engines everyday, but that is an expense some can not afford. So, if you are mechanically inclined, and have access to a qualified machinist have at it. I can tell you the most satisfying part of this hobby has been when "my fresh rebuilt 308 engine fired on the first turn over and ran!"
So, collect the engine rebuild information available on my site and other INTERNET locations, read and digest and if you are ready for an adventure... rebuild your own engine.
Good Luck!0 -
I certainly have neither the tools nor the knowledge to rebuild an engine myself. That alternative is out of the question! The engine in my 1946 C8CPE is being rebuilt by Harkin Machine in Watertown, SD. Mr. Harkin was recommended by several people on this Forum.
If I wanted a rebuilt 308 Hornet engine, my first choice would be Al Saffrahn in Arizona--there are a few others with the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval but darn few.
My question was..........is there a 308 Hornet, Twin-H Power engine out there for sale and, if so, what might it cost?0 -
Your price range for a "new" 308 with Twin H is going to be between 3-7K I doubt you will get a rebuilt engine ready to drop in with Twin H for less than 5K. If you price the parts to rebuild a 308 you are looking at minimum $2500 when you add machining and labor you are over 5K. Sometimes in very rare instances you can find deals but I have not seen any lately.0

51HornetA is one of the most qualified to answer that question, his evaluation is priceless when it comes to engines. He's built many, many 308's and other Brand-X engines. Whenever I have engine questions, he's my first source.0

If you found a NEW 308 with twin h it would be at least 60 years old now. I would not dare use a crate engine without checking it good. Not every machine shop knows the Hudson engines and if someone works on them they are usually in worse shape when you get them back as when you left them at the shop A friend had a 308 bored and all by a shop here in Tennessee that has a name of really knowing his stuff. When my friend told me the shop said he would have to put valve seats in the 53 block. I told the friend he better go get his motor that the shop owner was full of bs and would mess it up. Also sold him on putting 1/2 studs in place of the 7/16 head bolts. The friend assembled the engine and sealed the studs when he put them in the block. Then when he set the head down on the studs thats just what he done. Set it on top of the studs. Shop owner told him they were bent. He did get the head on after removeing the studs and put them backthrough the head one at a time. Always think of what my dad told me when I srtated working on cars over 60 years ago. EVERY BODY WHO WORKS OH CARS ARE NOT MECHANICS..0

You might also try Stu Coleman in Livingston, MT- he has quite a collection of Hudson stuff. Guess being pretty cheap myself, I would try to find one in running condition, rather than automatically rebuilding it. Join HET, if you haven't already, and post a Wanted ad. Put this request on the Street Rod section of this board- most likely source of a working 308 is a rodder putting in a "groundshaker" engine of some sort.
Knew a guy looking for a Model A Ford engine once- told him to go to car shows, and ask every guy with a hot rod Model A whether he still had the old engine. He bought one from the third guy he asked.0 -
Mike is giving you good advice here. I got three 308 engines from guys who were replacing their Hudson power trains. I just got two 262 engines from a guy who said he was cleaning out his "junk"0

I also would recommend Stu Coleman. I consider Stu a good friend and have bought many parts from him over the years. It is hard to decide if his parts or his knowledge is the best part of the deal. I am not sure who does Stu's machining for him but I expect that he has put more than one Hudson engine back togeather. His advice would be as good as you can get anywhere.
When I built my 308 I picked the best and most experienced person to do the work that was available. He had many years on antique engines and had a few Hudson engines behind him when he did mine. We did some modifications and tightened up the tollerances and put togeather what I consider one of the best 308's on tour today. At this point we have eight trouble free years on the engine and we barely have it broken in. I only hope that I have as good of luck with my 36-8 that I had with my 52-6. I am told that Al Safron built my eight.
Good luck with your project.:):)0
