Ride In An Airraplane
Took the first ride with the 3:07 gears under the 37 "T" today. If I'm correct it figures out to be a 34% step up from the 4:11 gears. Man what a difference !! NOT GONNA DO IT but that figures out to about 115 mph top speed ! I can start out on level ground in 2nd , the rolling hills in southern Indiana are no problem at all with the 212 and it is not even up to it's best, still got to get the carb working better, runs too rich. It even made the shifting easier. I think you guys with 308's and standard trans would really love this setup, or any of the bigger engines. Definately gonna do it to the 51 232 if I can find the gears reasonable . My dream for the 51 would be a 308 up front , OD tranny , and 3:07's at the back. Tower, this is Hudson 51 comeing in at 58 for landing on runway 22 . ----BUD

Any idea what rpm's you've got at highway speed?0 -
Sounds like what my 37 needs. The 4.11 in it makes hiway driving a little harsh i thought about a 8 inch Ford rearend instead i hate to have anything but Hudson but this is where we are left with no choice. What rearend did you use? Sounds like a G.M ratio to me?0

Aw, come on Bud - where's your sense of adventure. Take the old girl out and see just what she'll do. LOL ROF

No I don't know the RPM's but my musical ear tells me it's just fine. I am going to hook up a tach just out of curieosity when I get the time and notion. If you go back a bunch of posts or look up all posts by TOMBIA you'll see where I got this idea. I understood The rear ends are supposed to be Danna 44 from a 52 or later stepdown with automatic and just move the spring mounts inward 1 1/2 inch. Thats what I thought I bought, was out of the car and passed around some. Did'nt turn out that way. I had to move the mounts OUTWARD to match the spaceing on my 37 then I found I had to use spacers to move the tires out 1 1/4 inch. Be carefull if you do this, DON'T USE ANY THAT ARE NOT SOLID METAL or just have a longer bolt thru them to mount them and the rim with the same bolt or the web type ..What I used are machined from a solid block of aluminum , bolt on at the original drum holes and then have studs spaced evenly between for the rim to mount . I put grade 8 1 1/2 inch ALL THREAD bolts thru from the back side of the drum, ran in tight with Loctite on them and then gave another light bump with the impact gun and then put the drums back on . Since we're not pumping 500 hp to it I 'm fully satisfied it is both safe and will last . However, they do use this type of spacer on race cars which is why I chose it. Got them on the net . I am told you can go to the salvage yds and measure to find the right width and bolt pattern from other makes but I was allready in and I'm completely satisfied with the result. Oh yeah, I had to take 1 inch out of the original 37 drive shaft, did it myself, have done a good number of them , just be accurate and weld the end back in evenly, not surprizeingly a lot of shops do it like I did altho some will actually use a lathe and balancer, mine does not vibrate and that's good enough for me . The tag number on a 3:07 rear is 43 and 14 for gear tooth count . BUD0

ALEX, I quit sprint cars almost 40 years ago now { racing was different then } because I thought my young son needed a daddy more than I needed adventure , now I have a grandson. ask him what to do if something is broke and he'll tell you " Take it to Grampa " Think I'll stick around a while longer, been there-done that . A stock Pacemaker at highway speeds sounds like a bomber plane at full throttle depending on how much insulation you have. haha0

Bud, I think you wouldn't like a Pacemaker with those 3.07 gears. The '51 Hydramatic ratio of 3.58 would be a better choice, I think. And trust me, 3.07 with overdrive is overkill ... even 3.58 and OD is straining it a bit. In my Hornet I'm running the Spicer/Dana axle with 3.73 gears and OD, which seems just about right. Good cruising RPM and still makes almost all the hills at highway speed without having to kick down out of OD.0

What did you do about your OD? I've got a Dana rear-end that I plan on using for the '52 'vert, even though the original car is an earlier '52 and had the "P"-type rear end.
I was seriously considering getting Danny's conversion kit so that I can run a 700R-4, simply to have the OD. Are there other options I should consider?0 -
I still recommend the 3.5 gearing produced by the guys in England for the Railton Club. My '36T cruises at 65 on the frwy without a problem. Contact Ivan Zaremba, on this forum if you are interested in a set of these.0

You could very well be right PARK, I don't have any EXTRA power , just enough to get by, and for sure an OD with it behind the 212 the OD would NEVER get used . I'm just happy to have something far better than the 4:11 and with this houseing lots of ratios are availeable . WIth a bigger engine even I expect the OD would only get used on pretty flat ground for fuel economy and one would need to know when to use it as carbs and injectors deliver fuel in a far different way. You can be mashin on the gas and sucking in TOO MUCH fuel with carbs , Another note , for you guys wanting to use late model houseings in the older cars , the one in my 51 is like the one I used, 2 inches narrower than the 37 so a spacer IS needed , use the good one used on race cars .
