1929 Essex Twins! The power of the internet!
At a beautiful car show in Waterloo NY today (birthplace of Memorial Day) I got together with 2 owners of the same make, model and year autos, both 1929 Essex Rumble Seat Coupes, also identical colors and striping!!The owner of the original Essex (on the left) is a member on this forum(that's how I met him), the restored car (on the right)belongs to a good friend of mine here in Auburn, NY.His car was restored 35 years ago. The owners live less than 25 miles apart. The unrestored car belongs to a forum member and has been in his family since 1936, when it was last licensed!!It shows 15,000 original miles. It was a great experience to see these 2 identical twins together and do some comparisons! Weston, please feel free to share some of the history of your car if you would like! Thanks to both owners for this photo op! Scott

Look's like the one on the left needs some paint BAH!0

I agree , I wouldn't paint it.0

Im not sure I've seen cars left with their original patina instead of a quality paint job actually fetch more on the open market. Only exception being extremely rare cars.
I love those Essex pics though.0 -
There are a couple of cars in the New England area, one is a 34 Hudson 8, that are completely original, right down to the "weathered" paint job.
The owners have no intention of restoring them - just keeping them moving by keeping up the mechanical end of it.
At the Marlborough National last summer Paul Schuster brought his restored 34 Hudson 8 - just like your Essex pictures here the contrast is something to behold and admire.

Hi Scott,
It was great meeting with you guys yesterday and finally getting these two cars together for some pictures. I hope you all had a good time at the show. It was a perfect day and there were plenty of cars in attendance.
As far as a little info on my Essex, it was last registerd in NY state in 1936. It has 15,182 miles on the odometer and was stored away for years. A couple of locals purchased the car from the original owner and completely disassembled the car down to the frame. There was not much care taken to label things or group parts together- just alot of old coffee cans and cigar boxes of parts. From what I understand they were going to restore the car and either lost interest or whatever and the car just sat in a body shop until about 1958 or 1959 when my grandfather purchased it. He stored it away in a family warehouse and gave it to me in 1978 when I was 12 years old. Pretty cool gift for a 12 year old!!
I got interested in putting the car back together with my Dad in my early teens and we slowly began the process of figuring out where everything went. We got the engine and trans back in the frame and the body back on the frame and got it running again. We worked on and off on the car until about 1982. Our plan was to reassemble everything as is to determine what we had and what was missing or needing rebuild and then tear it all apart carefully and organized and do a full restoration.
One thing led to another and the car got put on the back burner for quite a few years. I got married in 1986, had kids, busy with career and didn't really get back into it again until the last few years. Now a fourth generation is involved in the resurrrection of the car with my 17 year old son helping along side of my Dad and me.
Our immediate plan is to get it driveable hopefully this summer and enjoy it all three of us. We hauled a bunch of boxes of parts back to my house today that had been stored at Dads. I'd love to tear it down for paint and chrome and upholstery eventually but I think it will be a blast to drive it in an unrestored condition for a while.
So that's the story. Hopefully we can get together for a cruise this summer! Take care- Weston0 -
Beautiful car, both of them. I hope the original one stays that way.
I have a question about the top material. Has it ever been replaced? If not, I'd like to know what it looks like. If it has a pattern embossed in it or is it smooth, etc. I'd love to see a close up photo of the material and the edge trim.:)0 -
Just a shameless plug to keep the roster updated on the '29 Essex.
If either owner hasn't gone here to record the serial # and information, could you please do so since I now have the pictures and would love to tie them into the proper detail on the roster.
