Got mine today as well. Haven't read it all, but found Sue Kennedy's 's article very intriguing. The article is on the history of the WTN with the focus on the magazine's editor's in particular from the beginning to present day. Being a club member for only the last 5 years, and no knowledge of some of the past misgivings concerning the WTN, I feel very fortunate to have such fine editor's as we do today.
Sam and MaryAnn- Wow! Continuously, issue after issue, y'all seem to out-do yourself with every issue. This issue is certainly, no has to be, the biggest WTN ever published. Quantity aside, quality runs through and through. Thank you again for all your fine efforts. Many, many rags run through our mailbox here at RussLynn Acres, but the WTN is the one I anticipate and enjoy the most.0 -
Unfortunately I won't get mine till we get back from the National, at least it will something to look forward to when we get home, would have been nice to read on the way over in the airbus.0

Thanks for the kind words. Sue's article MUST be read with the knowledge that early editors, especially the Souers, did the labels, kept track of the membership and dues, printed the magazine at home...all without the benefit of today's technology. The Club is only as great as it is because of the efforts of thousands of volunteers...folks who stepped up, often with minimum recognition, and worked selflessly. This 50th Anniversary is a great opportunity to applaud them all...:o:o0 -
Russell - yes, one should REALLY appreciate not only Sam's exc. quality of publication, but it's promptness. If you've read her article, you'd probably realize I was deeply involved during some of the crucial periods as I was the Treasurer. At the time the Treasurer not only handled the $ but provided the Editor with a list of those who'd paid their dues ergo, who should be receiving the WTN, a VERY time consuming job.
The crux of the problem, which was not addressed by her as she wasn't around then, was that if the WTN was not timely, dues were not paid = Club on the edge of being insolvent! If the WTN was late I would be inundated with letters of complaint saying "hey, I sent you my dues" on such & such a date, so "where's my WTN".
When Elwyn Muzzey "recruited" me to run for the office, at the St. Louis National, I believe in '69, he told me "you might have to put in some of your own money" from time to time. He had had to I guess, I never did have to.
I well remember some of us officers going to the Souers' family home to see their front room WTN operation & the dramatic firing of them by then Pres. Laurel Hanson at the Colo. National.
The Griffith Editorship was most unfortunate both for him as well as the Club. The smoothest operation was when Norm & I both lived in L.A. as we met often enabling me to give him the list of all who had "re-upped" & I would pay him the day the WTN was mailed.
Wow, this is bringing back a flood of memories I've long since forgotten!
I'd like to also add that Pres. Pete Jones & I, I feel, changed the Club into a democracy for the membership, from being an "old boy's club".
Geez, I just recalled the '67 "Transcontinental Run" which basically began in Ind. & went to Calif. (drove a ratty '33 T8 sd. my buddy had found in a New England junkyard!, LOL), but that's "another story"!0 -

I certainly didn't mean to step on any toes. I can most definately understand the tremendous task that early editors must have encountered. Lack of computers aside, the growth the HET club enjoyed in the '60's to '80's seemed exponential at times. Publishing a monthly magazine (or newsletter) in a timely manner, which included so many factors from so many different sources must have been absolutely over-bearing. Throw in daytime jobs, family and personal time, and in short order, deadlines can be so stressful, all the fun is gone.
I actually have a deep appreciation for efforts of past editors and their hardships they had to endure. It is those same trials and tribulations they encountered then that allows the rest of us to enjoy our fortunes today.
Newly paved roads are immensely more enjoyable if you first spent a lot of time fighting the ruts, and dust and mud of a dirt road that it once was.0 -
Here on the west coast, I haven't seen anyone post that they have received (WTN) theirs. I am on the west coast and Sat. the post office is closed! So this is my "trials and tribulations " added to not going to the National! Oh Worries ME!!0

Mine arrived today - just like fine wine (in my case fine beer) it gets better with every "vintage"!!!!!!!
I also can remember the years that it didn't come on time. In most every case it was simply a matter of overload - the editors simply couldn't cope what with personal problems, working, illness and other problems.
But that said we should take a moment to thank each and every editor for their contributions. It has been, in the past, a thankless task - having been an editor of a chapter newsletter I know that all to many times you only know you're doing a good job if nobody complains!!!!!!!!
Again, Sam and Mary Ann - thanks for another outstanding job. We all know that there will come a day that you will pass the torch, so to speak, to a new editor - and I do feel sorry for those to come. They will be judged on your performance - which will be so unfair. Hope to see you in Ponitac - if we can find you in the crowd.

I haven't received mine yet, also on the west coast. I guess it will get here on monday. Of course I don't expect it before the middle of the monthy anyway so this will be early if it comes monday. I always look forward to the WTN's arrival, the only problem is I read it all in one sitting.
