valve guide installation question

I searched old threads about valve guides, but didn't see this directly noted.
Re: 1952 Commodore 8
The valve guide has one side that is tapered and one side that is evenly honed down. Which side goes down into the block? The tapered end or the other end?

Larger bore portion goes up. Purpose was to provide a bit more clearence for the inevitable carbon build up on the valve stem.
Hope this helps

Larger bore portion goes up
Ok. Is the larger bore portion the side that is tapered or the side that is evenly worn down? I've only pulled one out so far and the tapered end was up. I can tell someone has been in the engine before and it just seemed odd. I would've thought the tapered end would go down.

Sorry, My reply was made quite late at night. Old age also got in the way. The "tapered" end goes up. If my memory is correct, only the exhaust guides are over bored a bit for the reason previously stated. Sorry for the confusion.

The proper installation including the distance from the valve seat for both the 6 and 8 cyl, is covered in the engine section of the Shop Service Manual with illustrations. Available in the club store.0

The picture and instructions for the valve guides in the 1951 shop manual show the tapered end up. The in and exh guides are not the same. They both drive into the block leaving 15/16 from top of block to top of guide. The exh guide is the longer one. This is for the 8 cylinder.0
