Sunday at the Nationals

Well, just got in from trolling the lots over in Pontiac. This being my first national event I was surprised at the number of Hudsons for the viewing. As I currently do not own one I am reliant upon others bringing their cars to for me to enjoy. Attendance looks good and I hope for more to view tomorrow evening.

Only gripe I had was some of the members were rather abrupt when approached in causal chit chat. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a young person (late 20s) or perhaps they just weren’t talkers? I am a club member and enjoying the meet as non badged spectator lets, try not to brush of the younger gen, we are the future.

Thanks to all who have brought out their cars and lets keep them on the road, they can take it, they're Hudsons.

Take some pics for those of us who couldn't make it. We had to cancel our plans to go unfortunately.

As far as your gripe, I've had similiar experiences at Hudson meets from a few individuals (Most are great however). I just turned 33, I always assumed it's an age thing too. Some seem surprised that I know what a Hudson is and more surprised that I own and drive one in stock form. Just a few curmudgeons out there I guess. Don't let it bother you, it's a great club and a great bunch of people.

Enjoy and keep us posted...I don't think I'll make the 200 year meet...

Great to see some younger Hudson people comming on board. The first national I attended was in RENO and I'll always remember that there were more WALKERS there than cars..

There are always some folks who would ***** even if you handed em a million dollars..don't let them bother you.

Plenty of us old farts around that would LOVE to chat with you and share our love of Hudsons with you.. My son just turned 30 today and he is slowly becomming a Hudson person.

    FYI

There will be a lot more Hudson's arriving each day this week. The majority of the owners do like to talk about their Hudsons regardless if they restored it themselfs or purchased it, so dont give up trying to speak to them. We really need more younger people to get involved with Hudson to keep the Marque going through the next generation....

I don't believe its a Hudson thing either, I go to the shows all the time and interview a lot of car people. There are a lot of grumpy basters out there....so, don't think its anymore than personality. If you are one of the grumpy, please wear a sign....it would make life easier on us all. :D

I found one owner wearing a shirt that said "Talk to me about my car".....he said in the past, people walked by, but appeared afraid to ask....when wore the shirt that said "ask", he said he would go "horse" talking to people at even the smallest show. It goes both ways.
  • Dont be discouraged by a very few club members who are a** holes. But again they may not be members. The great majority of Hudson folk will and want to help any way they can. I would be more than happy to talk with you and help you and any other young people any way I can. Health and age keeps me home. Hud 1105 you run into any one from MidSouth chapter. Tell them Billy says hi and they will talk to you and help out. There should be a 52 hornet sedan with TN tag for 1952. Green bottom and cream top.

Boy did we have an adventure! Friday 4AM, we left TX for Pontiac. The plan was to pick up Ken U. and HudsonTech on the way. I spent the better part of the last 2 months working on Doc, our '52 Hornet to get her ready. 30 miles from my house, she decided not to go, I guess. Initial inspection revealed a very strange phenomenon, to me. I just couldn't rationalize out a solution in my head. Problem was, car has Twin-H set-up. The front carb was sucking air like normal, the rear carb was not sucking at all (which sucked, to me). Anyway, after frantically calling everyone I could think of (after waiting a little while, 'cause it was so early), after some serious head-scratching, the consensus was in: broken camshaft. Not Good!

Ken U. has given me some new hope, though. He believes that my intake is possibly cracked, or that the plug in the bottom has rusted through. I'm gong to try and find a "new" intake manifold here at the Nat'l. and go ahead and get one if possible on the hope that he is right.

So, a call to AAA and a little while later, Doc was back at my shop and we loaded our luggage in my Dodge PU. We arrived here this afternoon and I took a few photos for those of you that could not make it. There was already about 250 cars here or so. I'll take some more tomorrow.

Pete- Sorry I woke you up Friday! I owe you one.

    Note the '39 Convertible!!
  • Russell: Thanks for the pictures... Have a GREAT first National.

Seeing the pics makes me sick that I can't be there... Looks like perfect weather and a lot of nice cars.

Russel, I have a Hash Twin H intake that is good that you are welcome to borrow to see if it cures your problem.

    Send more pics :)
  • Sunday afternoon/evening was beautiful. The cars kept rolling in all day long from pretty much everywhere you can think of. It was great to see that 39 convertible. Glenn and I will have pics and video updates posted, and more than likely some quick stories too.

I was very impressed with the beginnings of the swap meet setup. I really look forward to browsing thoughout the week.

I think if anyone was abrupt it's because we're tired from coming off the road. People should be in better spirits by tommorrow. Didn't get to have my car here sadly but the parking lot already looks amazing. LIVE FROM THE NATIONAL ---Aaron D. Hud-Nut News lol
  • I did notice an absence of 55 to 57 models. Is that because the fall under the AMC era?

I was close to having a car on the lot myself, was about to click buy it now on a 51 Hornet last summer, unfortunately the space in my garage was occupied by a 56 DeSoto and when I talked myself into doing it she was gone.

I will be posting my national pics to a photo bucket, and get the link up here as soon as possible.

I was thinking the same thing - Some may have had a long or rough trip, and could be a bit tense...

I suggest 'turning the other cheek', and possibly trying to turn an negative into a positive... Something like - "I am sorry if I bothered you, I am just interested in your Hudson - possibly some other time..." or something to the equivalent, in a neutral or nice manner.

It not only keeps communications channels open, but may cause the person to realize that they might have been unnecessarily 'curt' or impolite...

Im headed back up there tonight. If I run into a grouch this time my reply will be "Please be nice to me, one day, I will be taking care of your car." ;)

I like it. I am in my 30's and have been a member for two years now. I have always been attracted to Hudsons. My Grandfather owned a '52 Hornet sedan that he bought new. My father and I (mostly my father) have been restoring the car and hope to have it back on the road some day. With the help of several HET members and non we have received help at every turn. You may have to ask your questions a couple times but I have never been left with out an answer.

I am very pleased to see pictures of the National since I cannot attend myself. My advise to any new member is get involved as much as you can. I was able to host an event in my backyard this past May and loved every minute of it. Although the attendance was small I gained the courage to do it again.

If you meet someone who is less than kind to inquires or questions remind them that they were once in your shoes. Just because we have not been members for 50 years does not make this less our club than the long standing members.

Never get discouraged due to other peoples moods or bad attitudes we all have a desire to see Hudsons on the road and more power to all the new members who stick there hand out for more information.

Wishing I was in Pontiac, MI for the first time in my life. LOL:D

    I guess I've just got cars on the brain . . . .

Let me 'splain . . . nope, too long, let me sum up:

I go out this morning about 6:20, trusty camera in tow. Early enough, that not too many people milling around that early and can get some good pics. Sun's just about perfect, just came up on the horizon. I go around both lots (there's two lots to handle all the cars), and probably get 100 or so photos, easily 1/2 of which are good shots and maybe 20 or 30 frameable shots. I was pleased and excited to share with forum members as I know some of y'all are anxious to see what's going on, as I have been in the past. I figure before i go down to breakfast, I'll get 10 or 15 more posted to this thread. I grab the laptop, get it going, pop open the digital camera to retrieve the memory card, WTF!!! I left the card stuck in the computer from the night before. My camera is the kind that doesn't have a hard drive and stores all memory from pictures on the memory card. Needless to say, all the great pictures I had taken were future shadowy memories.

Try again tomorrow morning . . . stay tuned!

Some interesting, or notable cars that have made the journey:

    1) Golden Jubilee car

    2) Completed Jet Convertible Prototype

    3) X-161 Italia Prototype

    4) Production Italia

    5) Two 1909's

    6) Dover Mail Truck (think it's part of the Hostetler Collection)

    7) Two, maybe 3 vintage Hudson Racers (teens and twenties)

    8) Gobs of '30's and 40's convertibles

    9) 8-10 Pu's

    10) '34 Phaeton, which is an Aussie-bodied car

    11) 175-200 Stepdowns

    12) 3 or 4 '37 convertibles

    13) Derham Limo

    14) at least 12 Stepdown Convertibles

Can't remember everything, been a long day. I'm sure some folks won't even get here till tomorrow.
  • I'm jealous of you guys. Nice thing is, I know you guys will take lots of pic's!
  • Mr Chilton

Please post some photos of the teens and '20's racers. This is an area where I have great interest and would love to see them. If you would rather not post them I would still love to see pictures guysnamedtodd @ yahoo.com remove spaces.

The Jet convertible was covered early this morning, I still need to get back and take some pics of that. I probably took at 100-120 pictures this morning. If there is something in particular someone wants to see, let me know. Also can send pics via e-mail, if you request them through my e-mail, please. Those pics will be large and more detail can be seen.

I'll probably leave Pontiac Thursday morning, so if you see something inthe above photos you want a better shot of, let me know soon! Y'all can also call me at 210-380-9709, it's my cell.

I was reminded of one of the dumber comments I made to my father about 15 years ago while walking around this morning. He and I had gone to a Packard meet together. There was about 45-50 cars there. I, of course, was enthralled.

In my car stupor, and as we were walking, I commented,

"Man! Have you ever seen so many Packards all in one place before?".

When I didn't get an immediate answer, I looked over and saw a very quizzical look on his face.

He raised one eyebrow and said, "Yeah . . . at a PACKARD dealership!"

    Oops.

Well, I've certainly never seen so many Hudsons in one place before. The cars and the people here are just magical to me. I'm sure on my way back home, it will be like God wasn't ready for me in heaven and sent me back to earth.
