54 borg warner
My 54 borg warner seems to be slipping off the line... Once it gets into second it's fine... Is this possibly a band adjustment... 82 000 on the clock of a nice stock clean hornet sedan.. Runs like a kitten... This is the first time it's ever been a problem. Any thought's . When you nurse it off the line , it seems better... but still not good... Fluid is fine...

Harry: The 54 Hudson Borg Warner transmission book has a variety of trouble shooting discussions focused on the low to second shifting characteristics. If you need scans of those sections I would be glad to send them. You did not mention if the car is driven regularly or if you have had any reason to change the carburator or linkage. The linkage can definately cause this problem as can carburation and engine running status. If the car has set up for any period of time the valve associated with the upshift maybe sticking a bit. The upshift should occure from 1-2 at 10-12 MPH with light throttle and 31-34 with full throttle. Manually shift the car to low and drive it to 15MPH in Low then manually shift it to 2nd gear. The engine should drop RPM and the shift should occur with the gear change. See if the car will manually downshift correctly by reversing the process... the engine should brake with the downshift.
Hope this helps0 -

Ken,
Thanks for the input... here is the status... the car sits sometimes for a few months as i have anothere 54 hydro car... THis is a very nice orig with plain jane 2 barrell carb. The linkage hasn't been adjusted since i've had the car in the last 5yrs... It has always shifted perfect so I never saw a need to touch it... Fluid is not burnt.. nice bright red color... full.... again it only seems to slip in first and then either jump to second or catch...0
