Hudson Tools

Some of the repro floor pan talk on another thread got me thinking about this subject.

A few minutes into any Hudson service manual, and you realize there were a fairly large number of special Hudson 'tools' (complete with part numbers!). I'm fairly new to the Hudson world, and haven't quite explored every inch of my stepdown yet, so I'm not sure how many of these tools are REALLY necessary. So far I've been able to make simple fixtures, etc. to do the light work I've done, but I have yet to rebuild a front end, for instance. I know there are at least a few things I'll have to acquire/build to do that.

What are some opinions on which of the Hudson tools are irreplaceable to do the proper service work?

The reason I ask, is that I am a mechanical CAD designer, and was contemplating compiling a database of Hudson tools, so that these details are not lost for the ages. I would make a solid model (computer model) of the tool, and could then generate drawings with dimensions and materials, etc., so that these could be reproduced, with modern technologies and materials. There might even be enough call for some to reproduce in significant quantities.

What are some opinions on this?

Doug

  • Doug, In the stepdown era the maker of most of the specialty tools for Hudson servicing was the Kent Moore Organization which at that time was located in Detroit. The shop manuals of the stepdown era usually have a group photo of many of the tools described in the manual.[at least for hydromatic transmission servicing].I believe prior to the stepdown era Miller Manufacturing supplied Hudson with many of the job specific tools for repair of Hudson cars and trucks. Kent Moore is still around ,perhaps they might be able to help in your quest

Hudzilla, thanks for the great information (also on the floor pan thread).

I've sent an email to Kent Moore, who is still in the business of supplying professional servicing tools, and will post any further developments with them.

It's probably been awhile since they've been asked about Hudson stuff!

The Kent Moore Tool catalogs are available on eBay from time to time. The catalogs are Hudson specific and general tool catalogs put out each year. I have the Hudson catalogs for the Stepdown era. The tools are also available on eBay. I have been able to obtain all the extenal adjustment tools on eBay... helps to realize that the Hydramatic tools for the 46-54 years are identical or so close it makes no difference what "brand" you use.

    Good Luck.
