I found on the internet an interesting article for installation
http://www.nnnova.com/vintageair.html
of subj unit on a 62-65 Nova; was wondering if anyone
here has installed a Vintage Air Generation II Super
HEAT/COOL/DEFROST unit in a Wasp stepdown (54). It
might be helpful to speak with someone who has already
done this, for consultation purposes. TIA

  • Incidentally, Allen Lewis (Hudsonite living in Virginia) has successfully installed a retro-fit AC unit in his '54 Hornet coupe. He found a way of modifying the modern compressor to work with his 6 volt electrics. I don't recall which components he used to build the AC system, though.

I recently finished installing a cool/heat/defrost unit in my '51 Hornet. Equipment is very similar to (may be same as) Vintage Air system.

Most modern AC compressor clutrches will trigger on 6volts. If the one you have won't do it all you have to do is re-shim the clutch to the min. clearence specs and it will work., Then use a 6 volt fan of the correct size and you now have a 6v AC unit.

Allen used an olde unit which used the Hudsonheater fan as teh AC fan.. Worked real nice
  • Well after some deliberation, we selected the Old Air Products'
    Hurricane 1100 Series w/electronic controls, CAP-1100. We
will use the universal underdash pod (black face) w/2 outlets,
complimented with two circular outlets (32-2) which may be
mounted under the dash or on the kick panels. Since we
will fully insulate the automobile I anticipate that this unit
will totally satisfy our traveling needs. We have eliminated
the original heater, but kept the original ventilation sys. We
will have AC, heat and defrost, in addiltion.

was so kind to take the time to explain many + details
    of this particular unit. grin.gif

In looking up the website for Old Air Hurricane A/C units, I noticed that they have a trunk unit that looks promising, especially for my Kaiser. Anyone familiar with those?

    54HSWH,

You posted the above quote in 2004. I was wondering what was the outcome of the completed installation. I am considering which A/C unit to put in my 48, either the Oldairproducts unit that you refer to above or a larger unit from Rainbow Products.

    Thanks,

I went the Vintage Aire route, myself, but also included a 12V conversion for the car. It's in a '52 Hornet Sedan, and I've been toying with the idea of mounting another evaporator in the trunk area and utilizing vents in the back deck for the appreciation of the rear seat occupants. Sedans really have alot of cubic feet inside the cabin and the extra evaporator would really make a huge difference in cooling capacity.

I went the Vintage Air route from Texas. Installed it under the dash on the right side with 3 outlets on front. Changed my heater motor to a 12 volt unit and have fresh air, heated air and boy do the defrosters work. One thing I discovered, after a long period of time the air ducts would show moisture. I quickly found the remedy. Crack the cowl vent just enough so that you can feel outside air, problem solved. All new cars with air blend outside air with the air condition. My car stays at 60 degrees even with outside temp 105. BEST UNIT TO USE, WALT.
