Broken door handle

Hi new guy from Canada here. I have a question the exterior door handle on my 52 Hornet has broken. Specificall the white metal tab that goes into the square hole in the door skin. I tried JB weld but didn't hold. I'm going to try again using a little more JB. Question is this a common problem, the little tab of white metal seems like it would be prone to breaking off after a time. Anyone else have this problem. Also if i remove the screw hold ing the door handle from the door end, will I be able to get it back together. Las time I did the repair with the handle on. I had the door panel off, but I can't get my hand up inside the door at the top. Any info is appreciated. Don in Canada

  • Don, Is this a front door handle or do you have a four door and this is a rear door? In any event , You're better off getting another door handle. JB welding potmetal is OK for some things but I don't think a door handle thats being opened and closed any amount will hold up. I can't think of anything that you can use to braze or weld to potmetal (maybe some other guys can tell you about something) . You're better off getting another door handle. And , yes, you can remove the door handle without taking off the door panel. The small phillips head screw up behind the thumb button on the inside of the door panel is all you need to release it. Once thats unscrewed, slightly push your door handle forward. It should pop right off.The style door handle you have was used from 1950(Pacemakers) to 1954 so getting another should be no problem.
  • I have 4 handles to a hornet all driver quality but the one's I took off my hornet show wear, but are good operational handles. The other 2 are better quality. Let me know if you want to buy them and I will look at them again and take pictures if you wish. Since I also live in Canada it will not be a problem to ship. :)
  • Thx for the info, I appreciate it. Don

A question or a thought, Do these handles have the same sort of retainer clips like the early Essex -Hudson handles 28-31 and if so,is that there if they do?

  • no, they have a small white metal pc. that is about 1/4 " long, it's the weak point.

Walt here. I have 2 handles left over from when I rebuilt my car. Both have been rechromed and look new. The door lock pin that sticks out from the handle is adjustable, do you need the long or short one. I'm asking $50.00 for either one. If interested e-mail me, waltmordenti@aol.com.
