Sounds like your starter shaft is sticky. Squirt some WD40 on it.

...in other words, the little gear has to move in and out, along the shaft, in order to engage with (then disengage from) the ring gears. So if the shaft has dirt or junk on it, the gear can't move smoothly. So, use the WD40 and a cloth to thorughly clean the shaft and then be sure the little gear moves easily along it. (Just to enlarge on what Josh said, in case you're new to this stuff!)

I had a similiar problem with my starter, as described by Uncle Josh and Jon B. I pulled the starter, degreased everything really well, and lubed it up with a light oil before re-installing it. It's worked great ever since (that was in 2005). I also checked the teeth on the flywheel while it was out and cleaned the teeth out on it.

If you're pulling it, its a good time to repaint the starter housing as well.
  • Don't use WD-40 on anything you want to keep working. It is okay to break things loose with but when it dries it attracts moisture and your shaft will eventually rust from it. Use LDS #2 or a light sewing machine oil but don't use WD-40.

That's right. Most folks think WD-40 is an oil, but it's not. WD stands for "Water Displacement", and that's all it really is.

Actually isnt WD a silicone basd lubricant? I believe it is and I havent experienced any water attraction or rust because of it. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Harry's comment about not using WD-40 on the starter shaft, since it really is not an effective lubricant, but more effective as a rust inhibitor. To prove the point, if you are a fisherman and use ball bearing casting reels, put some WD-40 on the bearings. A few days have application (and especially on a nice cool morning!) your casts will land just a few feet from your boat! Been there, seen that, done that!
