The English Hudson has the tail light bar that is common for the English cars. There is a small light on each side of the licence plate and it mounts in the center back of the lower clam shell trunk. I would like to place additional tail lights on the rear fenders. Could someone post a photo or two of what the tail light looked like on the 1936 eights. Were they any different than the other Hudson's or Terraplanes? Also, if anyone has a set of these drop me a pm so we can work a deal. Thanks,:):)

The metal body was the same as other '36 models, but the glass lens is unique to the 8's as it has a central fin at right angles to the plane of the lens. The lens crops up on ebay from time to time around $60-75.

While the 1936 Hudson eights used the finned tail light lens, I don't believe that only the eights used them. In 1949 and 1950, I had a deluxe Hudson six (with the fancy wheel covers and chrome horns below the head lights), and it had the finned tail light lenses, i.e., it should have had them. Both fins had been broken off. At that time I was never able to find replacements. Years later, I found a box of 12 new ones at a former dealer and bought them. I took them to an HET National in the 1970's and sold them all in short order. I imagine they are still tough to come by when you need one.

Contact Mike Paul on HETmike@essex-comshape.co.nz (drop the HET etc). I think he has a finned lens available.

Just for fun, here is a website showing how to make your own red plastic taillight lenses. http://www.alumilite.com/HowTos/TailLightMoldingNoEquipment.cfm tells you how to make the mold. The link at the bottom of the page, shows you how to cast the lens.

Given the fact that '36 Hudson taillights are made of Unobtainium, some enterprising '36 owner might want to consider making up a few spares of plastic, "just in case". (He might also want to sell them to fellow '36 owners to help finance his "habit".)

There are also companies (and a few H-E-T'ers) who produce lenses of plastic, if one is not inclined to try this himself.
