Hill Climb HET cars!
With the Racing picture thread coming back up to the top today I thought this might be a good time to start this thread.
I have loved looking at all the racing pictures and reading about people reminiscing on the days of yore when they took every corner at make it or break it speeds. There is also a Drag racing thread which enlightened me on several other aspects of the HET cars ability to dominate when given to the right mechanic and driver.
What I feel is missing are Hill Climb pictures. I know that there were several Hill Climb records set and hope that there are people who took pictures. This is the area that I would love to see filled and I have one picture to start it off with courtesy of Dave Y in NZ.

This would also be the place to post if you have raced up a hill in your HET car win or lose picture or not!

Probably Hudson's greatest successes in hill climbing competition were with the '32 E-T & the '33 T8 which set records at Pike's Peak & other places. I understand the T8 record stood for many years. There are photos extant of them.
The Railton Club still competes in England in hill climbs which are still a popular item there.0 -
The car pictured is a replica of the Pikes Peak special, an Essex 4 cylinder model which held the record for that hill for some time. Built and owned by Graeme Shaskey, and extensively motored around New Zealand over the last 25 years or so. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understood the`933 Essex Terraplane 8 roadster set records on Mount Washington, not Pikes Peak. the car was locked in top gear and went all the way to the summit, breaking all existing records.

I am pretty sure the Terraplanes set records at Pikes Peak, but they were known to have set records in other places as well. In 1932, the Essex Terraplane Six was the winner at Pikes Peak. In 1933, also at Pikes Peak, the 1933 Six performed well again, beaten only by the Terraplane 8. I think Chet Miller was the driver of that car. Also, check out the prowess of the Hudson Super Six in such hill climbs in the early years of its manufacture. All of these cars were truly outstanding performers in their day.0

and the car is a '32 E-T.
Yes, the '33 T8 broke the '32 E-T's Pikes Peak records.0 -

Well it has been an enjoyable few minutes reading the post about Hillclimbing Hudsons!!!! Two years ago I won a Hillclimb in Newport Ind. with our restored 1933 Essex Terraplane 6 cyl sedan. I was first in class "D" which I think is 1928 to 1935 6 cyl cars, all makes. I didn't win last year because gas was so high! Couldn't justify spending $550.00 to go run an old car as fast as I can up a hill in south central Ind. It's a long drive from Pontiac. I have not been able to figure out how to get a pic of the car on the hill to import into this forum yet, but I will when I can. The Newport hill information is available on line, just google newport hillclimb. I think its about a 14% grade and about 1800 feet long. Doesn't sound like much, but it's a toughie for sure. I start in 1st gear run it up to about 18/20 mph then slide it into 2nd and finish the hill at about 38/42mph in 2nd. Can't seem to get it into 3rd and still accelerate, she just strats slowing down for some reason.
Anyway, the hillclimb is Oct 2/3 this year. I don't think I can affford to go this year either, still a long drive and the economy is not well in Michigan. Someone go and get pics for the rest of us. There are usualy about 4/5 Hudsons there from around the area, not too many from far away. Sue Kennedy has pics of my 33 going up the hill if you can contact here and get something on here that would be so cool.

Yes, the '33 T8 broke the '32 E-T's Pikes Peak records.
And if I remember right, after the '33 broke the record, it stood for some 20 years.0 -
Here's a great Hill climb on Youtube featuring a '47? Hudson leading off. A little sloppy, but great sound! Walt-LA

I wonder whether that is a Hornet engine. Seems very quick for a 212? Good traction too compared to many of the others.0 -
Thank you all for such great posts. There are sure to be more but in the meantime I found an Ad from a 1916 paper.

Will post the picture here if I can capture it and make it fit.

Here is a 1935 Rialton that was reported to race in Rob Roy Hill Climb in Melbourne, AUS.
Here it looks to be the same car racing.
I should always remember the Railtons! They were great light Hudson Powered Racers!

Todd,
Where did you find the Railton pics and more importantly, where is the car located--is it displayed somewhere as it appears?

These images were taken by Peter Hut on Flickr.com the car pictured is reported to be part of the George Hetrel Vintage car collection in Melbourne, AUS. That is all the information I have.

very interesting looking isn't it Ivan; I see it has dual sidedraft carbs.0
-
Do anyone know how to contact this collection? I think I see the exhaust pipe on the car's left side, so it must have "over the top" headers. Like to see more.
Attached photo is from the 1935 road test of the Railton Light Sport tourer done at Brooklands raceway outside of London for "The Autocar" magazine. It was a controversial shot and people were accused of staging it. Cars were driven up the "test hill" and none had ever "caught air" before! They re-did the run for the doubters and the Railton flew..........0 -
Very cool shot. Would like to read more about that.0
-
I think even the standard Terraplane Eight sedan flew over the Brooklands hill. I have a road test showing the back wheels well clear of the road.
DPA231 is in Christchurch NZ these days of course.0 -
My Dad runs his '37 H8 sd. at the Newport Hillclimb. A few years ago he felt confident that his Hudson had enough power to not only win his class,he took a few riders along. Jon O.from Chi/Mil, Jeff P. from Sou.Ind.a full tank of gas and the spare tire in place. Ran the hill in 33 seconds. He took 2nd.place that year, only because he was classed with a '38 Lasalle that claimed the engine CID was only 233. I told him it was B.S.. He protested but they never did reconcile his class time. It is cool to watch all the cars run the hill. The cars are supposed to be all "STOCK". I have yet to see a factory flathead Ford that had dual exhaust and a cam that causes it to lope erractic at idle, catch rubber in all 3 gears and called stock:rolleyes::rolleyes: but they are fun to watch. A few years ago we watched a guy in a '40FhF get ready to run the hill and forgot that he had it in neutral, and after he revv'd,tried to jam it in gear and blew the trans all over the ground.:eek:0

Yes it does and I found a picture of them for just a little more clarity.
The pictures are courteously of PeterHut's Flickr.com postings and is found here http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterhut/2560606808/in/photostream/
This collection is housed in the George Hetrel vintage car collection in Melbourne, AUS it looks to be a private collection, but he owns quite a few cars and has in the past opened his collection for viewing for certain car clubs.
Love seeing the flying Railton and would love to see the Terraplane getting airborne as well.
Thank you all for showing such enthusiasm for this thread!

Well here is a video of the George Hetrel Railton in action. Look at the 50 second mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6yb9FFTmP0
and here is the website that talks about it possibly prior to Hetrel's ownership: http://www.motormarques.com/content/view/209/63/
Sounds pretty fierce too!!0 -
This is one from my album, not sure when or where, somebody may be able to tell us where and when.0

Huddy42, I've got a colour shot of that car somewhere - red.
Interesting over the top headers and 4 sidedraft carbs.0 -
Here is a pic of John Snow at our famous Mount Panorama race circuit.
1939 Hudson Conv, this was before the circuit was even sealed.0 -

Lookd like a rare under running board radio antenna visable. Bet the reception was great on top!:D0 -

The Railton Club still competes in England in hill climbs which are still a popular item there.
The Railton club participated in the KOP Hill commemorative Run at Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire, England in September. The event is part of a fund raiser and you can see photo's/data at
http://www.kophillclimb.org.uk
As you watch the video's take the drive up the hill in the "E-type" and then the 37 AC. You can see the challenge as the AC has to shift down 3/4 the way through the hill.
The hill is just over 1000 meters long and has a rise of 100 meters with a maximum gradient of 1 to 4. Railton members Richard Hirst (Railton Light Tourer BYP 252) and Richard Hughes (Railton LST special YVS 862) had runs on the hill. There are some great photo's in the Railton Owners club Bulletin just sent out. See more photos at the club website: http://www.railton.org0 -
Here is one from the June, 8 1918 issue of "The Hudson Triangle". And you thought "Terraplaning" didn't begin until 1932!0
-
In 1933 a team took a Hudson 8 and an Essex-Terraplane 8 (I'm not quite sure if this is correct - it could have been 1932 with a Hudson 8 and an ET 6) and did a bunch of hill-climbs from Birmingham, Alabama all the way up to somewhere in Pennsylvania (again, I'm trying to remember as I cannot find the clip I had). I do remember they ran Lookout Mountain and another somewhere around Roanoke, VA.
Reason I remember (vaguely) is if you looked at the hill climbs, then looked at the roads, they had to have followed U S 11. If I remember correctly the records they set stood for a number of years.
One thing you have to remember is that these cars were driven from one hill-climb to the next. None of this high priced truck haulers and fancy stuff. Strictly drive the hell out of the cars and set records.
Hudsonly,
Alex Burr
