Unfortunately thin brass does tend to crack with age. However it is easily repaired. You need to drill two 1/8" holes to allow the fuel inside the float to drain out fully, one top and one bottom. Then cut a patch of .005" brass shim to fit over the crack. Tin over the crack, and around the holes, and also tin the patch with solder (50/50 lead/tin) using a good liquid flux. Don't use electrical core solder. Sweat the patch over the crack, holding the soldering iron on the patch until it is firmly merged with the solder on the float. Now solder the bottom hole closed, and with an assistant holding the float in cold water, so only the top is exposed, solder over the top hole. To test, dip the float in hot water. If there are any leaks the expanded air will bubble out. If this happens, re-do the soldering. You must keep it in cold water whilst doing the final soldering, otherwise the air inside the float will expand as the soldering heat is applied, and as it contracts with cooling may collapse the float slightly. Warning - don't apply a flame doing this job. Don't laugh - it has happened, and the fumes inside the float can cuase quite a destructive (to the float) explosion. Good luck,

Geoff, interesting & clever. Could one drill a hole in the crack(depending on its location) to reduce the number of holes that had to be patched? Could one solder the last hole on a block of ice (dont need a second person/wife) instead of the cold water? Thought these 2 comments may make the job quicker and easier. Just trying to be helpful. Yes, no reason why not, except perhaps the tendency for the crack to tear apart as you drill. As to sitting on a block of ice, may work, I've never tired it. Regards,

Well after several attempts to repair the float and it was cracked in several places all the way around, my friend made a new one for me. It works great and the Essex is back in the road.
I found a used float at the Carburetor Shop in Missouri, he won't sell anything unless you buy a rebuild kit. I aske dthe price of the rebuild kit and he qouated $110.00 for the kit. Then I asked the price with the float and he quoted $750.00!!!! Yes $750.00 for a carburetor float for a Stewart Model 25.
So beware if you ever have to do business with this establishment.0 -
A fellow in our chapter had preciseley the same problem, with a Hudson he bought last year. He finally accumulated enough Steward model 25's to acquire a spare float. But I think you had the best idea: remake the float from scratch, and make it correctly. If you find another used one it's only a matter of time before age catches up with it as well. And, making a new one may in the long run be cheaper than spending a lot of money collecting "parts carbs" in hope of the one illusive float that actually still works!
Maybe your friend can re-make these floats for other Hudson people who need them, and in so doing make a little pocket money in the process!0 -
If anyone needs a float for the Stewart Model 25 carb. I have the source who can repair your old float depending on the amount of damage/deterioration or make a new one.
I have one in my 28 Sedan he repaired and it is working great. When I say repaired he just didn't solder a hole he re-rolled the whole float with new brass.

Hi All, I have a complete stewart25 carb hanging o my wall I would let someone have it for free if they pay the shipping, I don't know what condition it is in, but it is there should anyone require it, It wont work to well on my small block Chev, it just cant give enough gas LOL

problem I have at the moment, is that I have to get the engine is out of the coupe,disassembled and back in before then, its going to be a close call as Iam of to Australia for 5 days over labour weekend as won a trip to the GP motor racing there all expenses paid and lost a week,hoping to reassemble motor next week

If anyone else has a stewart model 25 you may want to get rid of let me know.
or if anyone needs a float repaired or a new one made let me know and I will connect you with a source. He will either repair or make new one.
He can make just about any float just needs to see old one.
