Well guys I kinda messed up the 308 in the 50 PaceRacer yesterday. Guess I had the rev limiter set a little too high and she broke the crankshaft. Not a pretty picture but the block is untouched. the cam appears to be ok but the

crank has snapped off half way up the front rod arm.

she was still running but not good at all. had a knock only when she was

shut off. it threw off the alternator belt and that's when I found the broken

crankshaft.

anybody out there have a 5" stroker crankshaft they want to sell?

the engine is a 56 and everything behind the engine is set up for the 55-56

style crankshaft. i will go back with a 4.5" stroke crank if I have to but now

is the time to upgrade her for bigger cubic inches if possible.

thanks,

  • How many rpms were you turning?

You need to call me, right now if you can - ya got my number.

  • mark,

can't call... at work... rev limiter was set to 4800 rpm. the crack looks old in spots, like it was there before but hidden below the surface. i would take a picture but can't find my digital camera.

I was running her up in first gear to test out the new ram air box I made and

didn't think I was that high of a rpm. she hit the limiter when I went to shift

to second like the tranny flared between shifts. hit second gear a ton, so hard

in fact it topped out the front suspension! never done that before but also

    never ran this strong before.

I back out of the gas and shifted to third then noticed my voltmeter was on

12 volts. blew the alternator belt off again so I limped her home about 1/8

mile into the garage. when I shut her off i heard the knock.

when I pulled the blower belt off I first thought the center crank bolt was loose.

that's when I noticed the little spots of oil on the garage floor, the shrapnel

holes in the oil pan and the the fact I could move the blower pulley about 1/2"

in each direction. the balancer moved with the blower pulley so that's when I

pulled off the fuel pump block off place to take a look.

sure enough using one of those flexible optical lights with the eye piece I

could see the front rod arm of the crank was busted. the outer edges of

the crack are only about .0625" wide and shinny. the center is dull dark gray

in appearance and very rough like a flaw in the forging. kinda makes me think

its been there since day one.

not too happy right now but nothing I can do but fine a new crank.

talk later cause after work I'm going to need a stiff drink....

  • Those shorter cranks ain't supposed to do that. I'm sure about anybody else who's kept up with these engines will tell ya - that'a an abnormal break. Its usually #5. I'm betting your crank was flawed to start with.

I have a 55/56 short block. I doubt I'll ever do anything with it, as I have long crank engines. It has one rough cylinder that would clean up at 0.060". I have no idea what the crank measurements are as I've never had it completely apart. Its my mock-up engine.

You need to plan a visit, as I have my flow meter outfit up and running. I'd post pictures - but can't seem to get them uploaded to the gallery here anymore. Come and see me, bring your parts - and we can push/pull some air through your block and put numbers on them. Its a rather good time to be torn down. If you can't find a 5" crank elsewhere, we'll get something worked out on the 55/56-4.5" I have.

Too bad you weren't set up for a long crank - I've got one standing on the shop floor right now.

  • mark,

i'll get back with you soon as I survive the upcoming hangover.....

what ever crank I go with I have to modify it for the chevy small block

    harmonic balancer.

i believe that crack has been there since day one too. glad it didn't

totally come unglued when this happened. it still ran pretty smooth

without any thing weird noises. if i had not put the caps back on

the cutouts I would have never heard the knock.

just lucky i guess. the block looks usable but I won't know until

its totally apart and can check it all out.

last thing I need to be doing is building a new 308 from the ground

    up.

    talk soon,

  • The more I sit here and ponder it, the more I agree its been there a while. You've always had a hard time keeping your belts on and I remember the headaches you had setting up your blower belt alignment.

Oh well, come on down when the mood strikes ya. If your hometown searches don't turn up a crank, you know where one is. I'd subject the next crank to some serious testing and treatment before running it. I've got a dang fortune tied up in my stroker crank - but its been tested to death!

    Hang in there buddy.

  • Hi Ralph

How's the hangover? Sorry to hear about the crank. Weird things happen. One time I broke the snout off the front of the crank. Had it welded back on. Another time broke center main bearing cap. Another time I broke a stroker crank at #6 when I over rev. the motor. My current stroker crank has been in over 10 year. I have spares if you wish to go that route. I have several 55-56 cranks stock stroke if you go that route. Plan on being at Indy with my '41 on Oct. 9, 10, 11. for the open meet. Hope you are able to come and visit like you did last year. Give me a call if I can help. 309-267-6158 C

  • thanks Randy. I am surviving right now. I think I found a crank and its being checked out today. should have it back tomorrow with some luck.

the block, rod and piston looked good. having everything magged to be safe.

might have it back together by then but i'm not sure.

by the way the Green Toad use to run a .125" over 308 with a stock crankshaft in it. I remember that car from the web about 6-8 years ago. use to be a real runner with that engine. i would love to have that one around here but I can't get rid of the 42 2door sedan I have.

I will show up at ORP that weekend to watch you guys run again this year. had a blast last year just hope to have the PaceRacer back together.

    talk soon,

    Ralph

Wasnt there a resonance point in the RPM range on the Sixes (308), where if you held the RPM's there the crank would break?

Above or below that particular point you were ok, at least to redline.

5000 RPM comes to mind, but it has been 40 years or more & memory isn't what it used to be.
