What different color speedo/clocks were available in 52, and what determined which color you got in the car. I believe the ones in my car were switched at some point, but not sure. They are the same color as the ones in my 51 (copper/gold color center)

Thanks

Don

I am of the opinion, based on my 52 Hornet that all the 52 clocks and speedo's were inlaid mother of pearl. Some gold trim and chrome. I have not seen any other type.

I'm with Brownie, I know Hornet's and Comm's had the mother of pearl "marbelized" type of pattern, and is '52-specific. I think Wasps and PM's had std. black backgrounds.

Don, There were actually 3 different type of speedo/clock face combos available in 1952. The first was for the Pacemaker/Wasp which was the flat glass with the numeral graphics stenciled or silk screened onto the back side of the dial face. Then came the Hornet/Commodore version which was the black and white numeral band with a "taupe" or beige background. The third type was a 'cat's eye ' version which was a marbelized grey/black/white swirl pattern . It was available in the Hornet and Commodore 6 or 8. It looked like the 48-9 Commodore pattern except it wasn't brown as it was in those years. This cat's eye pattern lasted only one year-1952. It too had the beige or taupe background. The ones in your car sound as if they were from a 51 which used a gold background.

That's interesting, Lance. I didn't realize there was two different versions for HORN/COMM. I guess I haven't seen one with the taupe background. The "grey/black/white swirl pattern" is the one I was referring to, and is my favorite among stepdown gauge patterns. Also, didn't realize that the PM's and Wasps were stenciled on. I've got a bunch of extra sets of various speedos and clocks, but apparently all are from Senior cars. Speaking of that, what about the Supers? What did they have?
  • The Super used the black with white numerals on the plastic ring. The clock was a wind up instead of electric but otherwise looked very similar to the electrical. Electric clocks were a Super option. Russell, very possibly the reason you don't see Supers with the taupe background was because the Super series was gone after 51. The taupe background started in 1952.

Great info guys, thanks. It seems obvious that I have 51 speedo and clock. I have some time before I start putting the car back together, as it is currently a huge jigsaw puzzle, so I will keep my eyes out at the usual places.
