Generator or Voltage Regulator?

I hoipe this is easy for you electrical buffs - I am a backyard mechanic with what I hope is a small problem - my car is a 6 cylinder 1951 Pacemaker - still has a good six volt system - when the engine gets revved up the generator light flickers - the headlights do not appear to be affected by changing their intensity - can anyone tell me if it sounds like a voltage regulator or a generator? Or perhaps how to test each. I would buy both if need be - anyone suggest a good parts source? Thanks - Jack

I guess I am rather simplistic in my approach to this one. I first pull the generator off and take it down and have it re-worked/inspected at a local shop here in town. That sets me back less than 20 bucks. Put it back in and if the problem still is there I buy a new voltage regulator. The last one that I put in my 52 was available at my NADA dealer. I think it was about 30 bucks or so. I usually have the starter motor done at the same time I do the generator. It has nothing to do with any of the above, but I figure it saves me a trip and I know everything in my electrical system is top noch.....
  • Jack, I already have a thread going regarding this subject title "electrical woes", there is a lot of good information there that will help you. I am dealing with the same problems so you may find an answer there.

  • Thanks for the input - someone told me to check all the wires - hard to believe that something only 58 years old may have a loose wire - with a little bit of luck I'll figure it out by Wednesday as I hope to be joining about a hundred other vintage cars in a funeral procession for a dedicated car club member that just passed away. Take care -
