GM 350 Trans to 308
Howdy
How much trouble is it to install a Chevy 350 turbo to a Hudson 308? Is there a kit available? My '53 Hornet has the hydromatic and the twin H motor, but I am afraid that the tranny may be shot. Haven't started on it yet, but am looking at alternatives

Wouldn't it be better to rebuild your original? R.V.0

I believe Randy Maas has an adapter and also if I am correct Dany Spring ( new owner of K-Gap ) has one. Check with them

WILCAP/SHARP HAS A FINE ADAPTER PLATE THAT USES A CHRYSLER STARTER, RETAILS FOR 445.00 THEY ARE LOCATED IN pISMO BEACH, CAL BILL ALBRIGHT0

Bill, what else is involved to put a T-350 behind a hudson motor with the adapter plate? I know that the flex plate/flywheel will have to be modified, driveshaft made, but will this allow a t-350 to be bolt directly to the motor with no spacing issues?0

You might be better served putting a 700R4 GM trans behind the 308 since it has OD and would let the engine run at a lower RPM at cruising speeds, a little better MPG as well. Any of the adpaters should let you install any Chevy bolt pattern to your 308.0

I used the adaptor from Dany Spring with a 350 Turbo behind a 56 Hornet 308. If you have a 54 or eariler Big six it is a lot easier to do. (For your information Dany also has a Hi-Torque mini starter that it totally TITs! It works with ANY transmission behind a Hudson Big Six.) Anyway you have to have the flywheel modified. Any machine shop can do it or if you have a Bridgeport Mill in your back yard (best friend has one!) you could do it your self.
On his kit for 51-54 big sixes you use a manual transmission flywheel and have the pilot hole drilled to match the convertor and the three bolt holes drilled for the converter arms. The 55 and 56 308 you use a early flywheel, increase the center recess area to a larger diameter, drill a new crankshaft mounting pattern to match the 55-56 crankshaft, increase the pilot hole to match the converter & drill the three bolt holes for the converter arms. It took Mike and I about 2 hours to make a early flywheel for my 56-308. The last modification isthat the starter ring gear needs to be tack welded onto the flywheel to prevent the starter from pushing it off.
With Dany's kit you have to add a crossmember to the car and remove the factory crosmember under the transmission torque converter area, or clearence it.
Randy does have a slick kit that uses the stock Hydromatic flywheel (with minor modifications), bellhousing, starter & transmission mounting system. You do have to have the 350 turbo transmission case modified by removing the bellhousing.
Randy's kit keeps the top side of the engine compartment looking stock which is great for guys that want to keep their cars looking like it did the day it was built.
I went with Dany's because I didn't want to modify the tranmission case. I am going to race mine and I know that the case is expendable. Too many times these develope cracks and need to be replaced. Instead of having to machine a new case if or when I destroy one I can be back together in 1 to 2 days.
In the 50 Pacemaker I had to modify the orginal transmission cover by notching it and adding a extra piece to it because the transmission case hit the center top of it. I think that you would have to do this for any of the kits out there. Last item:Wilcap was working on their kit when I purchased mine from Dany and I have no information on it.
Hope this helps.

Do you have a price approximation on Dany's kit?
I think that Randy has the nicest set-up, but ultimately, you still have to worry about breaking a case.... There is a lot there to have to have "custom machined"
I would prefer to have an adapter where I have a flywheel prepped, add a crossmember, a starter, and simply bolt everything together. i am sure it is more difficult than that, but ultimately, I think if you have a tranny problem, since the trans is not modifed, all you got to do is swap it out for an ever so plentiful t-350...
I would be very interested in hearing more about Dany's adapter!
Or even the other adapter.
Not to toss it to a corner, Randy's is real nice thou, able to use all the stock mounts...
we saw their handiwork firsthand out in Pitt last year!
The Maas' are real nice folks, as well, if you never met them!0 -
Sorry but I don't remember the cost of the unit.
Dany and his wonderful wife are the new owners of K-Gap so if you
call there around 6:30 or later west coast time he should be there to
answer questions.
I have meet Randy and I am using several of his parts in my engine.
He was kind enough to offer me a great deal of information on things
to do on my motor to extract the most HorsePower possible.
Both Randy and Dany are two great Hudson Fanatics to know.
Their expertise in Drag Racing Hudsons is second to none.

Just got off the phone with Dany, how ironic!
I was really interested in the tranny adapter also. So I asked the price.
Adapter is in two configurations. 3/8" thick steel for the 55-56 engines. 7/8" thick aluminum for the 51-54 engines. Price $350
The Hi-torque starter $275.
PaceRacer50 - Man! Dany filled me in on you, please keep the forum informed of your racing exploits! And make some pictures too.

will the 51-54 adapter work on a 48-50 block?0
-
I can't imagine why it wouldn't. The bolt pattern is identical and the same transmission and clutch was used from 50-51. Even the 8 cyl should work.

Thanks, guys. Its good to know that the cheap, easy-to-find GM trannys will work.
This car has been sitting outside for years and has a good bit of rust. The main reason I bought it is that it is a totally complete '53 Hornet fordor w/TwinH power & hydromatic. When I get it home, depending on the extent of the rust, I plan to restore it to a driver. I'm just afraid that the original tranny might be shot. What does a re-build on one run? I'm fairly sure that I may hafta go thru the motor.
But, it just all speculation till I get her home, and get in, under & on it.
