Question on oil filter color

Am getting ready to paint the oil filter housing. Am having a senior moment here but I recall reading on the forum that the correct color was a Chevy orange. Can anyone give me a specific color code or product name?

Thanks,

Doug

I understand that different oil filter companies used different colors. Fram used the same color orange that Chevrolet used on their small block (327) engines. Depending on the year, Fram also painted the top black. So, If you are doing a 51 or a 52 you would want to use Chevrolet engine orange paint (rattle can works just fine) with a black top. Most Chevrolet (CHEV's Of the 40's) suppliers also have the proper decals for the Fram filters.

    Doug,

I found that Kubota Tractor orange is an almost perfect match for Fram orange, along with a black top as Brownie said. K-Gap has the correct decals too.

Good looking engine, John! Is that the same one that's in the '54?

Yep, that's the same engine Russell.

I finally painted the air cleaners just before I headed to Pontiac this summer. What I found interestng was when I media blasted the old paint off the air cleaners (after thoroughly packing and taping up any openings) I found that the bare metal had a light galvanized coating to it. Those things will be around for a while!
  • Brownie, I should have been more specific. My car is a 54 Special. Does that change your response?

Nope. The engine that John posted is a positive match. If you go with it you will be happy with the results.
