I need some help concerning removal of the rear wheel hubs on my 35 Terraplane so I can check the brake linings. Per the Procedure manual the correct puller is a J-446. Does anyone have one of these or a similar type that they can post pictures of? Any tips and / or instructions in the actual use would be greatly appreciated.

Have you followed the recent threads on drum removal, here on the Forum? Generally, the procedure (using a universal hub puller) has been illustrated by Paul Schuster here:

i have been told just loosen the axle nut a couple of threads, reinsert a cotter pin and do a slow drive around the block. the hubs come right off. regards, tom

Actually what you need is known as a "drum puller." It is a good idea to keep the nut on with space for the drum to "pop" off. This keeps it from flying across the room and killing someone. I just pulled a rear drum off of my '36T. I have two drum pullers. The small one that I can actually lift, wouldn't do it. So I had to het the big one, that I can hardly lift, and after a lot of hammering on the arms of the puller and a couple of wacks to the part that screws against the axle (end protected by bolt) it broke loose with a loud crack. No problemo! Borrow one of these from someone.

Recent experience with brakes: the dog-bone style in Paul Schuster's illustrations is exactly what's needed. The smaller center screw slide hammer type won't do it. (I'm assuming your 35 has the same tapered shaft as my 47)

The dog-bone style is available on eBay from about $50, but that's a cheaper version (probably offshore). Ask any older mechanic and he might be able to dig one up for you -- brake drums into the mid-60's needed this type of puller.

    Good luck.
  • Tom, If you're interested I've got one for sale. It's an OTC mil spec version. Looks to be used only a couple of times. Has 4 pulling legs and comes in its own box . No Wal Mart/chinese crap. This is the real deal. P M. if interested..

Just make sure you do not hit the center screw bolt straight into the axle, for if you do you can break the axle spacer and you now are in big trouble. Remove nut and washer, install nut back on so it's flush with the end of the axle, install puller, and put a 1/4 inch steel plate 1 and 1/2 inch square against the nut and screw bolt to touch plate then hammer the threaded bolt hard. If you need a puller I sell them. Walt.
