:confused:Does anyone know if there are any technical differences between a 1936 and a 1937 Hudson Terraplane steering box?

I know the '36 and '37 front suspensions are different, but are the steering boxes different? If they are, how are they different, and will they physically swap???

Someone with more knowledge will jump in here, but I'm pretty sure that there was a major change in 1937 with the steering box. As to whether they will physically exchange, I know not. Is your '37 gear defective? (There are still a lot of strange and obscure NOS parts still kicking around amongst Hudson parts vendors, so if yours is bad, don't automatically think that you can't find a replacement part for it...)

They are completely differetn, but Ibelieve you can transplant a complete assembly, resulting in lighter steering. The '36 is a work and sector type, and the later boxes have a roller tooth.

Oops, fingers too big - that should read "Worm" and sector.

Yes, the '36 & '37 Boxes are completly different as has been suggested, yes, they can be interchanged WITH modification to the steering box body, we used to do them all time with our '34-5 Hudson Terraplanes until the later boxes dried up, I think we used all we could find, the later boxes are a much better box resulting in lighter more direct steering. We used to call the 34-5-6 Armstong steering.

If you can find a box out of a long wheel base '34-5 they are a roller box rather than peg and worm.
  • I figured they were different. Just asking for a friend who is building a TP hot rod. Thanks!

I'd definitely go with a '37 or later unit. Much improved over '36, and easier to adjust. Back in the late forties and the fifties, the steering gear of choice for a lot of California hot rod builders was the "37-'39 Hudson unit. Many Hot Rod Magazine articles back then, when reviewing how a featured car was done, mentioned that it used a '37 Hudson steering gear assembly.

So, what kind of 'modifications' are needed to put a 37 box onto a 36?

Also where might one find one??:D

    Thanks,

    Jeff

P.S. Yes tired of the "Armstrong" steering myself!
