Well I got the Jet running last night after working on it most of the day,: I put a new condenser in it, still didn't start, It started cranking slow so I put the charger on it, still slow, changed the starter, still slow. I had this trouble before of cranking slow, so I changed the cables, fixed that problem. But this time I tried changing the starter selnoid, the one I had was no good, so I was too the point of kicking it and wanting to sell it to a scrap yard. :mad:So i set down drank a beer, then went back at it. I cleand up the selnoid hooked it up, and it started right up! And it is still starting right up! And it seems too run smoother too;) I did change the Dist. cap, the other one looked worn. So has anybody got any ideas on this one????

God is great, Beer is good, Hudson Jet is Crazy!:

  • Barry, put a Pertronix electronic ignition in it and forget about points 'n stuff.
  • Hard to be a diagnostic tech when not there, but from what you posted the culprit is corrosion on the electrical connections.

    1. Starter should have a clean connection to the engine... i.e. the bolts should create a "0" ohms resistance to the mounting plate.

    2. The connection to the electrical cable running from starter to solenoid should have bright shiny connectors and the studs on starter and solenoid should be clean and shiny bright too.

    3. Same story for the cable from battery to solenoid and ground strap.

While the electrical connections for our Hudsons seem to be secure... there is this insidious thing called corrosion that will ultimately create a resistance and sometimes an open curcuit (which will stop current flow) at each of the aforementioned connection points. You and I can only be aware this is going to happen and schedule preventative maintenance at least once a year. This was listed in the Hudson service charts... we all need to accomplish to assure trouble free service.

Glad you got the Jet runnin.... :)
  • I took it down the road last night and it runs like a striped ass ape! now, I guess I will check those connections more often, Matt where can you get the Pertronix Ignition at, and how much is it??

    Thanks, Guys!

  • Barry, the pertronix kits are available in 6 volt from many vendors. I got mine from Randy Maas. I don't remember the price, but it was very reasonable.

Install new six volt battery cables. Call Dave Kostansek as he sell them to fit. Battery to engine, engine to frame. Do not try to use 12 volt cables as they do not carry the amps. Walt.

I suggest you restore a second Jet so that you always have a backup. :)
