In a previous thread, Geoff mentioned welding the teeth of the flywheel ring gear to repair bad teeth. I just recently had a problem with my 49 262. The ring gear teeth were bad on one segment, probably ten or more teeth worn such that the starter would jamb on the ring gear!. With a big show coming up in Ormond Beach Thanksgiving weekend, I didn't want to go through the flywheel change, not to mention that I didn't have a good one to install !!

So I tried the mig welding trick that geoff mentioned. I used an air driven cutoff wheel to reshape the teeth after building up a little weld. The results don't look pretty but.. it WORKS! No more grinding and no more locked up starter.. And YES I do have the correct starter bolts, so there isn't any misalignment. The flywhee is a high mileage one..and was damaged by a bent starter shaft in a previous life...The information on this forum is fantastic.. Thanks again.

P.S. If you do this make sure your ground is attached to the flyweel ONLY.;)

You can shape the teeth so they mesh properly if you make a template from a good part of the flywheel using Bondo and use that to check the correct shape of each tooth.
