36 Terraplane gas tank replacement

My gas tank in my 36 Terraplane is shot, is there any suitable replacement from something newer with the filler hole roughly in the same spot or does anyone remake them.

    Have you considered having it overhauled by a company like Gas Tank Renu? Most people who use their services are happy with the results, though the tank won't win any awards for looking like brand new!

    If your tank is not repairable, Tanks, Inc. make galvanized and polethylene gas tanks for older cars for around $200. I found one in their catalog that I can make work in my 47 Hudson PU for $195.



    Rock Valley Antique Auto Parts, Inc. make stainless steel tanks. On line information shows they make Hudson and Essex tanks. Didn't list model or year. They do not make Hudson PU tanks. They are more expensive.



    Perhaps a local welding shop can make one using your old tank as a template.

    It it's the bottom rusted out, it would be possible to slice the bottom off and braze on a new bottom panel. I just got my old '36 tank soldered up to keep it going for a while, but with pinholes where there's one there's usually more not far away from showing up.

    I had the gas tank on my '36T treated by Renu and it works great. It is very reasonable and they can do tanks that are barely held together. It is a nationwide francise, just Google it for a shop in your area. The cost for the Renu was $145 and I had them make a new filler pipe, which was extra.

    I had thought the price for a "Renu job" was up in the $300 neighborhood, so it's nice to hear it only cost $145.



    The price for a new "Tanks, Inc." seems most reasonable. The late 30's Hudsons (and maybe the newer ones) simply have straps that hold these tanks against the underside of the trunk floor, so it would seem that maybe one of their tanks could be made to work. Then, one could simply salvage the filler neck from the old tank and have it welded in the appropriate postion on the new tank (admittedly, that would add to the price). Then, you'd have an absolutely new tank which (even in standard carbon steel) would probably last you another 60 years. At which point, you yourself probably wouldn't be around, anyway.

    Thank you for everyones reply. my tank has a few rust holes and a bunch of pinholes aswell, I thing I will look into the "Tanks Inc" and see what they can offer.
