I don't know "beans" about Hashes so to speak, but didn't they go to a 12 volt system? If so, that should answer your question.

Starter number for 1955 308 with hydramatic is MCH-6306.

If I remember right (going back 30 years) the major difference between this and earlier is the location of the mounting ears. I once took the guts out of a -6306 and put them in an MCH-6107 (1951-1954) starter that was on a 1953 Hornet I had at the time.

  • My car is a '53 Hornet and it is 6 volt positive ground, but it has a '55 308 with hydromatic in it so which starter do I need and does anyone know where I can get it. My starter's housing broke.

    You'll need MCH-6306.

  • Alex - Thanks for the information.

I suppose that it can be wired for 6v or 12v.

That starter is an Auto-Lite starter -It's a 6 volt starter. I don't believe that Hudson (AMC, of course) went to 12 volts until 1956.

Most starters used in 1955 cars were used on earlier Hudsons - like the one used with standard transmission on 1955 Wasp, is Auto-Lite MZ-4167, which was also used on 1953-1955 Wasp and on 1952 Pacemaker.

Other starters, such as MCH-6109 were 1951-1952 exc. Pacemaker, 1953-54 Super Wasp and 1953-1955 Hornet 6, standard transmission. Those pre-1955 cars were 6 volt of course. The MCH-6306 was used on 1955 Hornets, only, with hydramatic.

Like I said before, I took the guts out of a '55 starter and put them in the starter in the '53 Hornet sedan I had at the time. As I recall the solenoid on top wouldn't clear the block on the '53 engine because the mounting ears were located differently on the '55 engines.

    Hope this helps.

  • Alex – you are a wealth of information. Thank you from a Hudson novice. But I do love my Hornet.

55 Starters and 56 starters will not bolt into a 51 to 54 automatic. The starter drive housing is longer, 3 &1/4 inch, 51 to 54 is 2 3/4 inch. They had to move starter drive back as crank is 1/2 inch shorter. Walt.

Ditto as Walt described. The 55-6 starter is different. It locates different in the Hash body also-locates 2-3 inches higher than the S/D. I believe that the 55-6 bell-housing has interference with the Step-down floor pan because of this.

If the transmission is earlier 51 to 54, you need to use early starter!

Contact Walt Mordenti, he's in the WTN and he may help you with the starter drive end housing.

I have a '56 308 12V automatic starter, intact. I can have it checked out to be sure it spins. You would need to upgrade to 12V to use it, maybe too much at this point, but it's resting in my basement right now waiting for a new home.
  • How do I tell what year the transmission is?

On the left side of the main body there is a plate that has the year and model number. Tell us this info and you will have your answer. Walt.
