"Polly Pacemaker" Passed Her Road Test

"Polly Pacemaker" passed her road test with flying colors. The newly turned brake drums and new shoes need some miles to get broke in as she does pull to left. She was climbing the local mountains of Johnstown, PA at very good speeds. These are the same roads Bill Albright grew up with.

I even made the tires bark and left two even patches of black tire marks on the road.

It is unfortunate that she has to sit until the Army gets it act together and lets us complete our move. But I look forward to taking her on Route 66 in Missouri. Be looking at all the "Sonic" drive-ins for "Polly."

Glad to hear she's on the road again. At least you got some miles in before the snow:)

Did you set up your brakes like I wrote a while back in the WTN. It is also in the tech tip books I sell. Hudson brakes need no break in time for if it pulls now it will pull harder later. Are both drums the same size, std, 15, 20 or larger? After 60 thousand removed they get hot quicker. Anchor adjustment must be the same on front or rear axles. Walt.

    Walt:

I had a local brake shope do the work. I will readdress the brakes once we get to Fort Leonard Wood and it becomes Spring.

Do you happen to remember what issue hte article was in? I would like to re-read it and take it to the Brake Guy when I hav ethem check.

When the drum were turned (they are the original factory drums), the shop only took off 2/10,000ths. The shoes are "new" from Tim and Dave.

There's a pretty good chunk of old 66 left to cruise on in Missouri - just for example heading west out of Springfield exit 72 off I-44 will put you on Missouri 266, which will take you to MO 96 to Carthage. It's all route 66.

Much is buried by I-44 from St. Louis west, but if you look hard enough there are segments still driveable.

You might want to go over to the American Road forum @ http://americanroadmagazine.com/forum/index.php - register, then log in and click on General Discussion. Post under New Topic and ask for suggestions on running 66 thru Missouri. Lot of great people over on American Road and they'll be happy to help.

I'd like to help you - but the last time I drove 66 thru that area was back in, oh, 1953!!!! :D Things have changed a wee bit since then. When my daughter and I drove 96 between Carthage and Springfield I couldn't find anything I recognized!!!!

    Safe and happy travels.
