Distributor weights.

I have just fitted a new counterweight to a '25 Essex distributor (IB4002 Auto-Lite). the on in the distributor looked fine from the top, but on removal of the shaft, I could see a crack spreading from the centre almost right across, so it was on the point of self-destructing. The point of my post is to warn all 1925-early '28 Essex owners that they are living on borrowed time, as these weights are made of die-cast, and even though they may look good, they are fatigued and likely to break. If this happens, it mashes up the insides of your distributor, and the car will stop in a spectacular fashion.

I have used the last new bronze weight, and have the mold so if anyone wants one of these, please contact me and I'll get a batch made.

Geoff.

  • HI Geoff,

I know about the issue with the dist. advance weights. I would be interested in 4 or 5 depending on the cost. email @ HETsuper6esx@comcast.net (delete the HET)

Just to clarify, the wiegt is for the automatic advance mechanism. It is keyed to the distributor shaft, and is tensioned by a torsion flat spring. It is fitted to all IB 4001 and 4002 distributors, used on Essex sixes up to early 1928. The new weight is bronze, and needs to be dressed, drilled, and fitted to the shaft with the correct tension. I can provide a swap service if any desires this. Send me your distributor in exchange for a rebuilt one. I haven't priced this option, but would be around $100 plus postage. The new weights will be around $30 each from the foundry.
