Turn signal switch

I am in need of a schematic for the stepdown 54 turn signal switch/circuit. This 54 Hornet has a switch that has five wires from it, one of my other stepdown "spare switchs" (looks like 51-53) has six wires. None of my manuals have a schematic showing the turn signals.

The problem I am trying to solve is the right rear brake light does not work, but the right rear turn signal light does. Since they use the same wire to the rear of the car as well as the same bulb, I'm sure I am missing a connection in the switch somewhere. which wire? :)

I have provided the requested schematic for your use at this URL

With Ken's help I was able to find the problem. I had to remove the switch, disassemble it and clean contacts. It's now on it's last legs. held together with safety wire and electrical tape. It works..for now. This appears to be a single year turn signal switch. Altogther different than previous stepdown models. I'm in the market for a replacement. this one will not last forever.

Super Dave - According to my 1948-1954 Master Parts Catalog, part #308842 fits all Jets and all 1954 senior cars. This should be of some help as to availability.

It's a long shot, but maybe the electrical guts of the switch are similar for other makes of car -- a make whose parts are a bit more plentiful than Hudson part are! I rather doubt Hudson made its own switches and often (as in overdrives and Hydramatics, for example) there is a certain basic interchangeability. Is there any sign of a manufacturer;s name on the switch?

    Jon,

You are probably correct on it being something used on other cars.

Cole-Hersey (sp?) made many switches for the auto industry and still do. I didn't see any names or clues on the switch. It is a slide switch that is actuated by an elaborate mechanism. The slide switch portion could very likely be interchangeable. The self canceling is done differently and is much closer to what I have seen on more "modern" cars. The wires are rubber insulated with a cotten outer cover. Of course they are all deteriorated and have a tendancy to short to each other at the switch. Not a good thing! The earlier switch I have has colored plastic insulation as opposed to the cotten/rubber on the 54. Seems like a step backwards technology wise.
