just a quick question. can the engine be removed from a 52 stepdown with the rad, grille and front sheet metal removed but the fenders left on? if i go right thru the rad brackets is there room or will the manifolds cause probs? should i pull the engine and trans as one? thank you.

Yes you can pull the entire assembly with the fenders and inner panels in place.:D

Yes, as Super Dave said; easiest if use a "cherry picker" with adjustable leveling device to change the angle as you pull it out as well as when putting it back in.

And especially if you've got a Hydro., be sure you've got a sufficiently heavy duty lifting device as you're dealing with a VERY heavy assembly!

forgot to mention, it the manual 3 speed so it shouldn't be as heavy.

Yup, pulled one out of a '52 parts car that way about a month ago. I left the trans in the car, but it'll probably come out attached to the engine without too much fuss.
