Commodore Steering box removal?
I want to get my "box" out but can't seem to get close to a way to make it happen. It seems that my '49 must have had the steering installed first and the car built around it. It appears that it has one of those type of boxes that has the shaft to the steering wheel with it. Does anyone have any advice on how to remove it without dismantling too much?

If you want to remove the steering wheel "box" it comes out as a unit . column comes out with the box. Once the engine is installed it is more difficult but not impossible. You'll need to remove the tranny floor pan and then proceed to remove the three long bolts that attach the steering column and box to the front frame rail. Once thats done (I'm assuming all attaching hardware and mechanisms are detached) then pull the whole thing up through the passenger compartment. Have fun.0

Couldn't one have have it jacked up far enough to get it out the bottom? (I'm facing removal of the box & column from my '47).0

It is possible to remove the steering box from a stepdown Commodore without removing the floor pan. I changed the one on my '50C6. The steering box must be unbolted from the frame, the steering wheel must be pulled and you do need a puller or you will damage it! Unbolt the column from the bottom of the dash and remove the small cover on the firewall. I also found that removing the bottom front seat cushion helped and then you pull it out through the engine compartment. You also need a puller to remove the pitman arm off of the steering box and the pitman arm also needs to be detached from the drag link. It is a little tedious but certainly do-able (if I can do it, anyone else should be able to!)0

Thanks for the input but I think that the '50 is a little different from the '49. The column tube cover doesn't fasten at the floor and there isn't a floor access cover. I'll try wrestling with it again and if I don't have sucess pull the floor pan. Then I can work on some other stuff under there too.0

It's pretty much as RichardE says except - you romove the left front wheel, the left front inner fender panel and the left frame to cowl brace. The steering gear will come out from under the left front fender with the pitman arm attached. You need someone inside the car to help guide the steering shaft as you work the unit out . Norm0

Thanks for all the input. I took out the brace, rolled the box around to get past the EBrake cable, pulled the battery and out it came. No need to take out the inner fender. I left the column in the cab. I'm taking it to Red Head Steering in Seattle to tighten it up.0
