36 T-Plane glove box lock removal
I need to remove the lock and pull knob on my glove box door on my 36 Terraplane for rust repair. How do I do this??? The door is off the car, the lock is locked and I do not have a key for it. The large nut that holds it to the door can not come off without remove the slidding bolt on the back of the cylinder, but that is not budging with out a key. Do I need to get a key made first? and can a key be made without removing the lock? Am I missing something simple?

Chris,
It's been a while since took my lock off, but I didn't have a key either and if I remember correctly, the lock smith removed the sliding bar. If memory serves me, I had to install the bar when I installed the lock. I think it slides out of the lock when the key is in a certain position.0 -
Follow Scott's advice. I tried to take mine off myself and I broke the pot metal and I have never been able to find a replacement.0

Thank's for the info I will take it to a lock smith. Another question how many key's are there for a 36 Terraplane, I do not have key's for the door, ingnition or trunk, what uses the same key?0

The glove box door can be keyed the same as the one door that locks and the trunk (2) locks, they are Briggs & Stratton locks and any old time locksmith should have the sheet on this. Good luck.
It appears that your car is a series 62Custom? The vin # begins with 62. The locking glove box, dissapearing wind wings, two taillights and a few other items designate this higher trim package.0 -
Thank you for the info. My car is actually a searies 61, only one taillight and the front windows are one piece but it does have the banjo steering wheel, and the electric hand shift. Is this an odd combination?0

If one believes the literature, it is. However as an interested '36T owner I have observed every possible combination. I think that you could basically go down the list of accessories and get whatever combination you wanted. I have seen '36T pickup trucks with dual outside horns, a number of 61's with banjo steering wheels and my series 62 doesn't have a banjo wheel, but I do have disapearing wind wing, dual taillights, etc. So they seem to come in every possible combination.0
