I have a prepped frame that some one else did, ready to transfer PU parts to. But I have found some things not matching up so wonder if some one can help id the prepped frame? Here are some shots of the axle on PU and the one from the other frame. Notice the torsion bar hookup difference--

Have you checked your '37 parts book to see if there is a difference between "commercial car" and passenger car components, regarding the frame and axle?

This photo I have of a '37 frame (for a cv., but should be same as a passenger car) certainly indicates that the front spring is attached farther back than on the pickup -- same as your photo.

The rusty one you show is from a 112, which doesn't have the radius arms from the chassis.

If you need a 1937 parts book, I have scanned one and it is posted under 1937 on the Hudson On-line Library @ http://tinyurl.com/yuplr3 - There is also a 1930-1939 chassis parts book posted under 1930 that would help.

  • I agree with Geoff. The axle in pictures 3 & 4 appears to be a 112 axle and should have a VIN stamped on the passenger side end of the axle. This number is (probably) just above the part number that is cast into the axle. The shock mount goes toward the front of the car.

If the first 2 digits of the stamped number are 89 or 90, that would confirm that it is from a 112.

Ok, this is what I found on the axle on the pipe stand-

    The stamped part # is 152717 -- can't find a match in the parts book (closes I see is a # 152715 for 70-71-buscoupe- 78-80-88

The stamped VIN # 703646 (70 indicates 117" commercial chassis?)

Section 15, page 7 of 37 maintenance manual says "the 36-37 axles are attached to the chassis both by the front springs and the torque arms" + the picture shows the torque arm on axle assembly

So-- I am confused as to why this one doesn't have torque arms ??????

    What am I missing ?

As I understand it - as far as '36 goes - commercial vehicles didn't have the torque arms, unlike the passenger vehicles (I've seen 2 '36 trucks and neither of them had the torque arms). If '37 is the same way then maybe this is an axle from a truck?

Well, the 37 PU in the pictures has the torque arms!

I find it strange that both are not mentioned in the manual.

went back out and checked the # on the axle on chassis and found it to be 711309 So, I am assuming that some one changed out the cab many years ago to a 71 series chassis ?

Was also in a phone conversation with Robbie Williams, who told me that all commercial cars-trucks (70-78) had the axles with no torque arms ---

36 up to 39 passenger cars have the front axle with the torque arms and the springs have U shackles at both ends. All trucks have the straight front axle, connected to frame at front end and a U shackle at the rear. The Hudson 112 has the same front end as the trucks. Walt.
