Help identifying a Teraplane

I have a photo of my Great-grandfather by a Teraplane and would like some help with the year of the car and any other information you experts may have. I hope the photo loaded properly.

    It's a 1936 model, apparently (from presence of the horns) a model 62, Terraplane Custom Six. 6-cylinder, 212 cu. in. displacement, 88 HP. Door length indicates it's a 2-door sedan or a coupe. Price was about $600.

    It is a 1936 series 61 (no dissapearing windwing) 4 door sedan!

    My reference says Model 61 didn't come with front-mounted horns, so Dad must've liked them well enough to spring for them as an option.

    I just bought a car just like this. Model 62,2 door sedan. 36K miles. I remembered the car I bought as a kid. I thought it was so cool how the door glass operated,roll down,and disappeared or rolled out .I once rode my bicycle several miles to look at it. I learned of a car like it a few weeks ago, went, looked at it,same car. The only difference in it now is that someone dumbass took it apart. They were going to restore it!! Yeh,right,it is a real 36k car,no rust and had a beautiful original interior,ran and drove last I saw it-38 years ago,and had the original bronze finish.

    Did you all notice the dual radio antennas? must be aftermarket or CB!

    And see the front plate frame, it looks like a Hudson accessorie.

    OK question time. My 36 8 waterfall grill has only two visible vertical bars in the "V" format that are visible. Does this mean that the Hudson grills are different than the Teraplane grills?

    No CB back then. Could be a Civil Defense radio, depends on when the pic was taken. Or, perhaps dual aftermarket antennae for a regular Hudson radio. as suggested?

    Definitely a Model 61 or a 62 Brougham, look at the shape of the rear side window...NOT a four door car, for certain.



    I was wondering about the horns, too. My '37 Model 71 has one horn under the hood. I've seen both '36 and '37 cars with either single or dual externally mounted horns. Was this a standard mounting on the higher-priced 62/63 and 72/73 models, or a dealer option on the 61/71 cars, or both?

    I can't speak about the 1936 cars, but in the 1937 cars, the 71 (and 70) Terraplanes would have had a single horn, firewall mounted (with a long trumpet on the front), whereas the model 72, and all Hudsons, would have had dual firewall mounted horns (shaped like a spiral, with a triangular trumpet). As far as I know, the chrome exterior horns were an extra-cost option on all Hudsons and Terraplanes.

    I don't think that there were any hard or fast rules, I have seen all kinds of combinations on the '36 model 61 or 62. Model 62 definitely had the disapearing wind wing, but you could get the banjo steering wheel and exterior horns or even dual taillights for your model 61, but they all came standard on the 62. I have even seen '36 T pickups with dual exterior horns and they were all supposed to be under the hood.

    Me thinks you are right, Richard. When I got my '36, there was one beat-up horn on the left. It looked exactly like the ones here on grampa's 36. It was so shabby that I took it off.

    I'd love to find a pair of that style. The hunt is part of the fun!...slim

    You can see the horns on the cardboard box ready to go on my 36. The triangle horn fronts are in the fore-ground just behind the bolts and screwdrivers. Should start putting them togeather in the next day or so....

    Brownie, it all looks expensive! It is amazing how much one can spend on chrome plating these days, even on nickel plating (interior stuff.) My bill for my '36T came to almost $2K and there isn't even that much to plate!!

    Wow. Count your blessings, Richard, dat's cheap! If you think that's bad, stay away from the 50's models!
