52 Pork Chop Silver Soldering?

I've got a decent restorable pair of 52 Hornet pork chops. One of them has a small hole which will need to be silver soldered. Anyone have a good plater they use that can do this repair BUT still be reasonable? I'd prefer to use someone local in So Cal but will consider others if they are reasonable. thanks, Niels

Worse case, anyone have a nice restorable / restored set forsale?

Hi Neils, why dont you do the silver soldering urself, all you need is a stick of silver solder (comes in different levels of solder as well as heat ranges and a gas torch or little blow torch, jewelers us alot of very low temp versions of these

    a suggestion

  • Most chrome platers will make minor repairs like this during prep for chroming. If you're in SO Cal you're in hotrod mecca and should be able to find someone local (that hasn't shut down their because of enviro police) that can do the work or refer you to someone. I don't know what's happening in TJ but that may be an option, I know guys that have gone south of the border for interior work etc.

If you only have a couple of small parts you may be able to find someone that builds guns that does some plating.

In my opinion if you can find a shop local (within driving distance) you're better off... anytime you ship your part to an untested source source you take a chance.

There are reputable companies out there that you can send stuff to as well. Prices vary greatly between platers...

I've used a local plater 6 or 7 years ago... they did great work but I thought it was a little high. I had left and right headlight bezels from a 67 GTO and a cable remote rearview mirror done and it cost me $500 bucks. Unfortunately at the time you could only get one of the bezels in reproduction (the other side is now available) and the remote mirrors were difficult to find.

If someone has a nice set it may be cheaper in the long run...

Check out Christensen Plating, 2455 E 52nd, Los Angles, Ca.

They specialize in old cars. I had them do a bird radiator cap for my 1934 Chevy back in the 1980's. All the eyes, beak, and feathers detailing came out perfect.

Their phone number then, was 213 585 8730. Because there have been so many zip code changes is southern Calif. it may have changed.

Good hunting and happy new year.

    Niels,

Many years ago when I lived in Tarzana/Encino San Fernando valley I had all my chrome on my 1947 Cadillac sedan & '51 Commodore completely replatted and used http://www.bumper.com/ little pricey, but excellent workmanship with on time delivery, also shouldn't be far drive from you? Since relocating to Las Vegas I use www.americanpolishingplating.com

I have a plater here in Utah that I have been using for some 50 years. Good product, good price and reasonable turn-around. They normally give me a brake on customer work and since I run a business I do not pay taxes. I'll pass this saving on to you. If all else fails in finding someone local, send me some photo's of what you need and I will see if I can get you a bid you can live with. Keep in mind that the bid is difficult to get from a picture but I have done it before.

Why fool around, Contact Jason at ALBRIGHT HUDSON and he may have a new set. By the time you have it repaired and rechromed the cost will be just as much, and some lines will be gone. Walt.
