48-53 lower trim timetable
Hi all:
Let you know I am a go on materials and the dies to be made. But I am third on the list in production. He tells me the trim will be ready around the first of january (ABOUT 3 MONTHS HE SAID).
It will all be made out of stainless steel and since I am buying a large quanilty of stainless he is giving me a price break and the price will be a little lower as inital though. Looks like the full set for a coupe will be $550.00 and add $100.00 for professional polishing. A 4 door will be $630.00 and add $100 for polishing if wanted.
Individually front fender is about $60, coupe door $110, coupe quarter panel $135. Sedan door $95 each and sedan quarter about $110. each. Will be a price break as above if you want a full set.
If you want to pre-order with me to expedite your trim in January, I asked for a $50.00 deposit and the let me know if you want 2 or 4 door, include your address and phone number and if you want it polished or not.
This will be me as solid number of pieces and lengths for the first run. You can order individually also. If you change your mind I will refund your deposit.

Although at this time I do not need any trim, this was a much needed undertaking and am pleased to see it completely underway. How long do you see doing this for and how many "extra" pieces if any do you plan on making?

Hi Todd:
I plan on producing enough for 35-40 complete sets in total, but will steer towards what is being in demand. Seems a lot of sedan sets are also needed. May break down 50/50 for 2 and 4 doors.
If and when these sell, I go from there on producing more.

Trouble with the pieces from K-Gap are they come in about 8" lengths, unlike the originals that came in full-lenths. When using several short pieces, your trim, especially the speedline trim, is going to have "bumps", or swelled out spots, on the stainless where the retainers are. They don't make nice straight lines on the trim and reflect light poorly on newly-polished stainless.
I'm working on possibly making retainers that are the correct length, just like the originals and will eliminate such problems. The difference is in manufacturing. The small sections can be made on a shear and brake, but longer pieces (longer than the length of a small brake or shear) need to be manufactured on a roll-forming machine, particularly the quarter panel trim, which is made with a distinct curve from top to bottom.0 -

On my 53 4-dr the lower trim is painted plain steel, not stainless. Could they be made in plain steel? Would the cost be significantly lower? $630 is kind of steep for my budget.

Are the pieces on a brougham the same as a coupe?
I need to take inventory on what I have, but I'm guessing that I'll need a piece or two.0 -

I think Russ is only making them out of stainless, which can be scuffed and painted if desired rather than polished.0 -
So are these in production and available? It is now Dec, 2009. All these are old posts???0

Just made a phone call to check on progress. He states he will have the trim roll formed by Dec 31st or sooner and is working on it So I am thinking by the middle of January, I will have have these first few sets in my posession and ready to ship.
As stated above the cost of material between stainless and steel is not significant, but they have to be made by 2 different dies (stainless and metal have different rebound forming is guess) which doubles the cost of dies.0 -
