cracked rotor button

Ok, I have a 52 C8. I wasn't noticing any problems, but removing the distributor cap, I noticed I had a rotor button where part of the base had broken off. Interesting, I had never seen that happen before. So, I ordered a new rotor button. I put that on today and the car wouldn't start. So, I pulled the cap back off only to find the new button was busted up worse than the one I was replacing.
So my question is, what could be going on under the distributor cap that is causing the base of the rotor button to fall apart. I'll recheck the condensor, etc., but it did not look to have anything infringing on its rotation.
Oh, and all this happened in front of the house garage and not the shop garage. So the car is taking up the wife's parking space until I can get her going again. For my sake, I hope it won't be long...:D

Did you check the button before installation? These caps are now made overseas and quality control is less than desired. I just bought a couple of caps from Dave K. and one was busted in the box (broken spring). I figure on tune-up parts for old cars these days, if you get 50% of them that are worth a damn, you're ahead of the curve.0

I got the tune up kit from Dave, this one looked like a 60 year old NOS piece. I don't think China had much to do with this one.0

Does anybody have a Napa part number for the 8 cylinders?
I have the Hornets as Napa AL-112; and 48-49's as AL-62.
I can't seem to put my hands on my interchange manual today.0 -
