262 plug removal

i have a 262 i pulled out for my 53 hornet. it has not been running for 12 to 15 years. i will have to put new plugs in. the old ones have a lot of dirt and mouse nest material down in the holes next to the plug. i was thinking about blowing it out with compressed air and letting the soak a little with penetrating oil before i try.

any suggestions for me? one plug is pretty corroded, to the point the hex shape has lost a little of it's shape. how's the best way to not get any dirt in there? should i pull the head off anyway? both rad hoses had been unhooked for years. should i worry if something got down there? hate to buy a new head gasket if i don't need to. or is removing the head inportant anyway to see how the valves are doing? the engine turnes freely and has good clean oil in it.

    The oil has probably separated-Clean vs. dirty. Once you start this engine,the oil is likely going to get dirty and turn to mud. Slug is the very first thing the oil pick-up pulls up. This is bad . You should consider doing a few repairs before trying to start this one. Drain the oil,at the very least and while the oil drain plug is out, bend a wire, stick it through the oil drain hole and see if you can pull some slug out??. This is just a quick check. I'm sure other will have some rcommendations.

    It's a damnsite easyer to pull the head and pan now, than after it's installed. JMHO

    I agree! The engine's all ready pulled, why not take the time to do it once and do it right!

    thank you all. i will pull the pan and probably the head as well. it's a cast head so not as much to worry about the threads i guess. i have been using the "hook" tool or pick i have, it'd breaking it up pretty good. i like the shop vac idea, haden't thought of that. i was kicking the idea aroun of starting this on the stand i made for it. so we'll have to see how that will work. thanks again. hr

    A test some guys did on here a while back showed a mixture of acetone and trans fluid was dramticly better than ANY over the counter penetrateing oil . BUD

    You mentioned rodent droppings.. NEVER breath the dust from them! It can be deadly! So if you find them in an old car.. try to remove them without getting the dust airborn... easier said than done..At least wear a mask of some kind.

    Yeah, and whatever you do, don't eat any of it, either! Not sure, but that's probably bad for you, too!
