  • Don't let a silly little paper wrapped bundle of tobacco control you.

I know it is easier said than done, but take charge.

Own your destiny, mind over matter, all of that kind of stuff....

Congrats on being "smoke free" for two days....

Also, set a goal/prize for yourself....

with the money you save from being smoke free, for say a month....

buy something for yourself or Hudson, as a reward.

    Best of luck!

  • Hey Ron good for you! :-) I quit about 1 1/2 years ago after 29 years! I used a drug called "wellbutrin" (hope the spelling is correct!) which was very helpful in keeping me from climbing the walls or trying to kill someone! You might talk to your doctor about this, it only took me 3 weeks on a gradual reduction method, smoke 5 less cigs a day each week until you don't smoke any.

Let me know how you're doing at it.

  • I used the patch to quit. That was 12 years ago. It kept me from strangleing everybody within reaching distance. I was suspose to use them for 3 weeks but after the first week I couldn't find any place left on my body without hair so I gave the rest to my dad. He quit after 2 weeks of using them and he smoked for 31 years.

Biggest help was taking it one day at a time: Today I am not going to smoke.

I didn't care about tomorrow and it helped a lot.

Good luck and don't give in. Your much better off suffering for a while then injesting all that toxic crap.

  • i used the patch after nearly 50 years. took two times for me to finally quit. been 10 years or so now . . it still smells great when someone else smokes but cars and buildings and eating establishments smell like shit.... used to nearly kill for my morning coffee and a couple butts, now its just the coffee. after meals just get up and get busy... good luck, its hard to quit but you will feel so dang much better and the cough will stop too. food tastes great even, sometimes too much better.

  • I tried the patch twice, but found I could smoke the same even with the patch.........guess too much tolerance built up over the years! lol Guess it was all the "other" things we were smoking in the '70's!

  • Get Scared Ron!

I smoked for many years and one day my Mom called to tell me her three pack a day habit (menthol Kools) had provided her a reminder. Twenty years after quiting smoking she was diagnosed with emphosema. She could hardly breath and was on O2 walk around for five years. The day she called I put the pack of open Marlboros on the table and laid my lighter on top. Today, 30 years later I am still a non smoker. But that pack of Marlboros and lighter are still with me. They are encased in clear plastic today and are a constant reminder that smoking has ruined some of my life already and I need not let anymore of my life be carried off with smoke.

My Dad died when he was my age (67). He had smoked from age 11. He had no lungs left, could not walk 100 yards without angina attack, coughed incessantly, and you don't want to know about the expectoration! Stick with it Ron, let your Hudson do the smoking instead! Best wishes,

    Geoff.

I went the hypnotherapist route about 10 years ago. It worked for about 10 months & I then started again. I had a guarantee of the course working so went back again & have not smoked cigarettes since.

Stay strong - you will feel better no matter what technique you use to quit

I'm sixty five quit when I was 34. The first thing I had to do was refer to myself as a Non smoker. Not a smoker who quit. My ex wife said i was always saying I was going to do things and never followed through. I quit and she didn't. That ONE thing I can thank her for. If you can think of one logical reason to keep smoking..do it. I haven't been able to come up with a good reason in 31 years. I spend the money on Hudsons and my wife. Not in that order!

I smoked from the time I was 15 until - I can't remember now. I do remember that I walked up to the cigaratte machine and thought to myself "$1 a pack is to expensive!" I walked away and quit smoking.

  • First, Don't wait to quit like I did! I was 37, when I had my first of 3 heart attacks, in less than 4 months. Was in the Hospital from Nov 7 1989 until mid Jan 1990.(except for Thanksgiving day and Christmas day.) I quit and didn't even know I was quitting. My doctor told me that one more cigarette would kill me. Not that it MIGHT kill me but that it WOULD kill me. For quite a while after I finally got out of the hospital, If someone lit up around me, it would smell sooooo good! I found, that if I took a few sips of water, it would help the urge to pass. Now they stink and I can tell if there has been someone smoking in the car or the house, even though I did not see them.

Food tastes better. Smells are more intense, sometimes good, sometimes bad. But LIFE with my wife and my son are great. I almost lost my life, but thanks to God and the doctors, I got a second chance. And I am NOT going to see it go up in SMOKE!

  • Ron, hope everything's going ok on the quitting. I never smoked but my dad used to brag about smoking for 57 years without a problem. He passed away a year and half ago due to emphezyma which really took him down in less than 3 years. When first diagnosed, he quit with Nicorette gum but by then it was too late.

Best of luck to you. Every Hudsonite is pulling for you!!

Day 3 .....Want to thank you all for your support. I think today was a little better then yesterday. I am still feeling my pockets during the day at work looking for them..and they are not there..I sure hope tomorrow and the day after and after get this crap off my mind..I know its not a hard drug but it sure feels like it to me...I am sure glade I do not know about the hard drugs..Kinda feel a little free now.....Thanks Ron
  • I have read that niccotine is one of the most addictive drugs there is. My understanding is that quiting is one of the most difficult things someone may encounter in their life.

Glad to hear you made it thru day three.....

Anyone else out ther that is currently smoking that wants to join Ron?

It seems you got a supportive audience!

    Best of luck!

  • Easy. Dont light up and quit making excuses and using them as a crutch, plus I couldn't drink beer and smoke at the same time, quit 40 years ago.
  • I spent 18 days in the hospital recovering from a perforated ulcer in 1985. Went from three packs a day to zip. never have missed them, but for two years I would find myself reaching in my pocket-just habit. Take it one day at a time and you will succeed!

Starting day 6 smoke free. Still have the urges but they are fewer and farther apart. Thanks Ron
  • See? you already there!

    good job...

  • Good for you Ron! You know, I know smoking is bad for your health and all, but the main reason I quit was for my son (he's 2 1/2). I didn't want him to grow listening to me tell him he shouldn't smoke and then I go utside and have a cig! I hate hypocrisy more than smoking, therefore, I knew I had to quit. Keep up the good work! :-)

  • Way to go Ron! Glad to see you are still a quitter.

Good Luck and you know you can count on your Hudson Buddies for support.

  • "Good for you Ron" I started at age 12 stopped at age 27 that was 24 years ago cold without the help of the patch or gum I am 51 now a non-smoker and your "climbing the walls" it's a mind game with your will, it takes about 8 to 10 day to overcome the nicotine drive after that it is all in your mind pay attention to what makes you need it, for me I became aware that when I saw the pack (my brand) on the counter, ground, a trash can, and so on I felt the need to pick it up and shake it. That was my que the trigger in my head to crave it, from that point on it was easer to fight it off. My point is that marketing is a powerful tool don't over look it and know yourself look for your triggers. Keep an open mind and be the winner!

FANTASTIC!!! Keep up the good work!! I am 67 now and I quit cold turkey Oct 29th, 1969 at about 5Pm. Left work, reached into my pocket for the smokes, empty pack, littered the road with it and haven't had one since. Had quit in 1963 just prior to getting out of the Air Force. Like an idiot I started again,- can't say that I really enjoyed them, just a bad habit.

Started as a teen, but never inhaled untill I went in the service. Wrong move!! Again, keep it up. More money to spend on Hudsons.

Go for it Ron - I'm 69, started when I was about 15 (forget the math!! LOL) I quit about, oh, 1985 - around there, when butts were $1 a pack. I walked up to a cigarette machine, said to myself, $1 is to much, and walked away. I know not everybody can do that, but it can be done. Also, it's a bit hard at first, but, yes, it does get easier every day. I still, today, have shortness of breath and some, not to major, complications from 33 years of smoking - fortunately I wasn't a heavy smoker; about a pack a day.

One other advantage to quiting smoking was I had extra money to buy gas to get to work and back - at that time a 60 mile a day commute.

So good luck to you, Ron. I hope you make it. I think you got a lot of "former" smokers pulling for you.

  • BOY. This thread is loaded with OLD GUYS. I Quit in 1965, Got in the way of my beer drinking.
  • Just finished visiting a neighbor who is sad to say on her last days. A big time smoker. They are pushing almost 24 liters of O-2 and she is fighting to breath. The big reason to quit is it is bad for your health. Cigretts is the BIGGEST drug on the market today. Yes I said DRUG. My only regret is that I can't encourage my wife to stop smoking. She is literaty explosive at the mention of "why won't you stop smoking" comments. My heart breaks for her as I can see her in the same situation as our neighbor. Please keep me in your prayers too. I will remember all of you too. God bless you all.

Its going on 17 months with no smoke in these lungs except for some second hand smoke and a little Hudson exhaust thanks to you guys and some others. I also went for a blood work up and check up about 3 months ago and my colesteral was 279 YIKS. Well the doc put me on some meds and last week had it checked and now its 175..Much better. I guess the moral to this story is.......If I would have known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself ????? LOL. Take care, Ron

    Ron:

Heres a little tip that helped me through it all. Smoking is a habit. (no kidding)...

part of the habit is where you keep the smokes. Shirt pocket, etc....

I kept a roll of Life Savers in the pocket where I put the smokes. When your brain triggeres impulse to reach for a smoke, I would pop a life saver in my mouth. Or something you like better. This got me through the first two weeks. After that the nicotine is out of your system, and better days are ahead. Food tastes great, even your smeller is sharper. THe main thing is after awhile you can take a full lungfull of air. I started in 1943 and quit cold turkey in 1967 during a bad chest cold & cough bout. Lifes 100X greater without those things......
