You're talking Hudson....and not Terraplane, right? I know of several '32 Essex Terraplanes, one Essex, but no '32 Hudson convertibles. (Well, I know of would be '32....but then, the owner might decide to make it a '33, LOL!)

  • I will get some pictures up shortly. The car is definately a 32 convertible.I should not have stated Hudson convertible but Terraplane as stated on the instument panel. It is missing its engine, but overall body in very descent restorable condition.I should have more information about its history by the weekend...I was just looking to get a better idea of how many of these existed...Thank you

There's a fellow in the Hudson club who keeps a registry of all known '32 - '33 Terraplanes: Dave Putman. You could e-mail him at HETDBPutman@msn.com and ask him. (Delete the HET from the address before sending, it's a mask to discourage spambots.)

While you're at it, you might be so kind as to give him your name and address, and the serial number of your car so he can add it to his list!
  • Thank you, I shall email him to see what he has.I will keep you updated....

there was a '32 Hudson conv. stashed in White Plains, N. Y. by on/off long time HET member Hal Denman - he sold it last year, not sure of it's fate. Ed may know.

E-T convertibles are literally a "dime a dozen" compared to the H8s - I don't believe ANY '33 Hudson conv. known to exist, or practically any other body style, LOL!

Zach Brinkerhoff had a beautifully restored '33 H8 coupe at Nashville but has sold it, don't know where it is either.
  • Hello, when you say that (E-T convertibles are literally a "dime a dozen"),is that for the '32 or are ther just quite a few of them still around.Thank you, for your reply..

Pete has his tongue in his cheek, but what he means is that, in comparison to the number of '32 Hudson convertibles (maybe one or two) there are many more '32 Terraplane convertibles. But, I'd guess that the actual number would be less than 20 (a wild guess). I'm sure that the only other Essex Terraplane convertibles (1933) would be scarcer, due to the fact that NOBODY made very many cars in 1933, least of all the Hudson company.

Ummmmm, he said, "I am looking at a good solid project, and would like to know a little more about it..." as in he hasn't pounced on it yet...

Maybe he doesn't want to let anybody know his whereabouts to keep all the potential vultures away... :D:D:D

With or without an engine if the car is "all there" and not a rust bucket it sounds like a great find!

PS... send pics we love pics

Congradulations and welcome to the world of Hudson's. Is this your first?
  • Hello, My first Huson, but not my first restoration.I always liked the cars, but never went into depth with them until now...Thanks,Sean

Congratulations on your purchase! They are neat little cars and you may already know that they were introduced in 1932 at a big event at Hudson, with Amelia Earhart christening the car (with a bottle of aviation fuel). Then there was a big "driveaway" of a thousand or so Terraplanes, from the factory to all corners of the country.

If you're not already a member of the H-E-T Club, you may want to join, because it's a great clearinghouse of information and you'll tap into a network of fellow owners as well. When you get the roster you can find out the names of 1932 owners in your area (or maybe you can get a list from the '32-33 registrar). In most cases, Hudson owners are willing to help fellow owners who seek restoration advice, and are happy to let you photograph and inspect their cars.

There are two things that chracterize the H-E-T -- the Club doesn't have "judging" for trophies, and H-E-T members tend to drive (as opposed to simply show) their cars. The cars that are entered in (not-H-E-T) car shows are, for the most part, driven to the shows. You're certainly welcome to do a 100-point restoration but don't feel that you'll be looked down on, if you don't!
  • Thank you for the nice invitation...Sean

    LOL...

    Way to go...:D

  • The 32H conv that Hal Denman had was sold to Manny & George Dragone. They also bought the X161 and a low mileage 50 Super 8 sedan from Hal. Hal still has his 33ET6 swb roadster(not conv coupe).

Hi Sean, Welcome to the HET world, a great load of people and are very even helpful to retro rodders like me, though I like the stock stuff as much as the altered cars and a convertible or boat tail would be the alternate in either version

  • Hello, pickeds the car up tonight, and it took a while, since the rear wheels were locked up,and it was difficult to get on the trailer from its location.I did not see a data plate on the firewall so I will look for the numbers on the rear..I will be looking for the six cylinder engine and I believe four speed tranny for it,if any one has one for sale..Pictures will be up soon..Thank you

if it's a 6 it's an E-T. Has a 3 speed, forget the 4 speed, LOL as Hudson never made or used one exc. in the GM built Hydramatic trans.
  • I know it was the six,but i was told it was a four speed..Three is what I thought..Thank You..

This is the one we finally figured out was a 1935!!! Right???

In any event, Pete, Essex was produced in 1932 (Model E, Pacemaker, serial numbers 1281685 to 1300384 and EC Standard, serial numbers 1297748 to 1300384) until mid-year. The 1932 Essex-Terraplane was intro'd on July 23, 1932 as the Model's K Pacemaker and Special, serial numbers 350000 to 364124.

Did the Dover trucks have 3 sp or 4 sp trans? If they had a 4sp, would it bolt to the Hudson or Terraplane cars?

    Thanks Dave.

I started looking for Dover information. I haven't found much information about them other than who, where and when they were made.

Was the Dover drive train the same as used in the Hudsons?
