50 Pacemaker interior colors?
I am having a new head liner installed & my seats recovered. I want to recolor the vinyl on the doors & back of the front seat to the original color but not sure what that is. My door panels are gray vinyl but some are brown, is the brown just faded gray? Also on the post between the doors, that vinyl is brown. The interior is all original. I would not think they mixed gray & brown vinyl together would they?
Thanks for your help!

I had a 50 pacemaker 50 years ago. I think the vinal is supposed to be all gray. I think it had started to turn brown in spots for what ever reason. Im not sure tho. and maybe someone out there will be better help than me. I do know many people replaced their upholstery through the years as more expensive models appeared in the junk yards.0

After replying I found your pictures. It is supposed to be all gray. The peace below the rear quarter window is the correct color.0

The vinyl should be grey - the brownish tint is because of the compsition of the board behind the vinyl and the reaction of the glue they used to attach the vinyl. I beleive they now make a cement that will not effect new vinyl in this same way, so your new material should remain the correct color for a much longer period of time. The recessed areas of the door would have been a light blue color, about the color of the trim pieces behind the window crank and door handle.

Rich,
I have a '50 Pacemaker, also, and I have the same problem with the grey paneling being brown in places. Where there is padding behind, the grey material has stayed grey, but where it is directly on the board material, the brown appears. My friend, Stan Brown, who started the Hampton Coach company that makes interiors for Chevrolets and other GM vehicles, told me that the brown color is because of creosote that the backing board was soaked in. It comes through only where there is no padding.
By the way, your interior plastic pieces are the same color as mine, the spruce green. Have your knobs disintegated as mine have?

I just went out and looked at my '50 Pacemaker Deluxe and it's the same story - shades of gray and brown. Does anyone know the correct shade for when I get around to replacing it?
One other observation - on the Pacemaker Deluxe, the central sections on the doors are striped cloth, matching the seats like in picture posted earlier. On my non-Deluxe parts car, those areas seem to have been blue vinyl.
As to the plastic pieces, mine look like they were green, but are starting to turn black. The knobs disintegrated years ago, like yours.0 -
Chris,
My Pacemaker is a brougham, also, though not a deluxe. The center panels of my doors are blue like those on your parts car.
Since the gearshift knob and escutions behind the door handles and window winders are perfect, but the knobs have disintegrated, I suspect the knobs were made by a different supplier or from a different type plastic from the other pieces.
