49 hudson

I was brousing through my sons #39 May '10 issue of RODZ, THE HOT ROD KULTURE MAG, and came across a spread on Mike Jacox's 49 Hudson in West Palm Beach, Florida. It is an interesting story on how he got it from someone who saved it from setting in a field for 14 years, and how Mike brought it back to life.

It know has a 308 twin-H, 7X cam, shaved head, Clifford header, Muncie 4-speed, 77 Mustang II 8 inch rear end with 5 lug axles, frenched head lights, Linclon door buttons, 3 in. lowering blocks, side pipes and more. Cool looking car. Sorry I have no way of posting pictures. Perhaps someone in Florida can post some pictures.

Another neat article was on the 1st Annual Speed Weekend in Northern Sweden. It is a Bonneville style, three days of racing, on a frozen lake. More than 60 cars and bikes, from rat rods to daily drivers, even a Rolls Royce, had a traction learning curve on the three kilometer strip of ice. Sounds like fun, a slippen and a sliden, oh ya.

Maybe some of our Swedish friends, on the forum, can tell us more about it, and if there were any hudsons that participated in the race, and post some pictures.

Have a good day. Lee

  • That's my car. It only took three years for the pictures to get in the magazine. I have the car all apart right now doing some body work and changing a few things. I am driving out to a show in Texas at the begining of April, so I have to get it back together by then.
  • What show in Texas you are attending? When? Where? I enjoyed the article too and bought the magazine. I have had a picture of the engine for some time ... sniped it from the Net some place.

Nice car... would be a hoot to see it in person.

Nice! Must be the Lone Star Round-up, in Austin.

Can you tell us more about the Muncie 4-speed trans adapter set up? Are you still using the Hudson clutch or something else?

What changes are in the works? Glad to hear from you again. Have a good trip to the car show.

  • It is the Lone Star Round-Up we are heading out to. The tranny adapter came from Wilcap. It uses a custom flywheel, and everything else is Chevy. The clutch, pressure plate, bell housing is all Chevy. I used a hydraulic throw out bearing because there was no room for linkage with the amout of movement in the steering arm. It works really well. I have probably put about 5000 miles on it since it has been in the car.

These pictures show the mock-up, and the last one is after I polished the adapter plate and engine turned it.
  • thanks for posting pics, seen your car in the latest 'ol skool rodz. maybe ill see it up close at the roundup.

Thanks for the pictures and information. Can you tell us more about the custom flywheel? What a sweet set up using later drive train in such a cool looking car.

Are there any plans for this becomeing a kit.

  • Very sweet ride. I actually picked up this magazine and was really surprised to see a cool old Hudson in it, especially with the Hudson motor still there!

I really love the pinstriping on the deck lid. There is a guy close to me that is wanting to stripe mine up once the snow clears.

Cool car that would be a blast to drive around especially with the 4-speed conversion. Since Wilcap has all the work done it would not be hard to put a Termac 5-speed or a Heavy duty Borg-Warner T-5 in a Hudson now...

    later,

I have a T5 to put in my '48 Coupe (with '51 308)- I've talked to the Wilcap guy, and he said the only thing he hasn't worked out is the pilot bushing. Seems that some cranks are machined for a bushing, some are not (bushing was in the flywheel on early manual trans cars). I've since been told that all crankshafts in hydramatic equipped cars had the machining, but only '51 and later manual tran models did (story was that as the hydramatic became more popular, it became more cost efficient to just machine all the cranks, rather than trying to keep them separate).

The bad news is that you have to remove the main caps and lower the crankshaft in order to get the longer flywheel mounting bolts in from the back. The conversion uses a Chevy flywheel, which is thicker than Hudson so needs longer bolts. I need a rear seal anyhow, and getting a look at the main and rod bearings probably wouldn't be a bad idea either, so it isn't such a problem. Now if I could just get the *&%$ tractor done and free up the shop space. . .

If you're using a T5, it needs to be from a 1991 or earlier S10 pickup- the later ones won't work with the kit, and the T5's used in cars have the shifter too far back. Early to mid '80's is best, because it has mechanical speedometer gear.

BTW, the above conversion info is what I have pieced together- If I'm wrong on any of it, I would appreciate being corrected.

My Dad and I go every year. He drives his '32 F*** Roadster, last year I took the Hornet. All his hot rod buddies go as well. It's gotten so big, they have moved the "show" to the fairgrounds, but the real "show" is on South Congress around the clubs there. It's where everyone hangs out when not on the fairgrounds.
