1950 Pacemaker brake shoes

The brake shoe linings on a 1950 Pacemaker are suppose to be 11 x 1 3/4" both front and rear. I recently checked the brake shoes in the two boxes I've aquired over the years of eventual replacement brake shoes for my '50 Pacemaker. One box has a set where all the four linings are 12 x 1 3/4". The other box has a matching pair that is 9" x 1 3/4 and the other pair is 12 x 1 3/4". My question is, are the 12 x 1 3/4" lining shoes OK to use on my Pacemaker? Thanks for any help here!

Better check those 12s in a drum. They might be 11 inch. Hudson didn't use 12 inch brakes. Pre-stepdowns were 10 inch except for Commadore 8s and trucks which were 11 inch.
  • When I measured the brake linings, I used a tape measure across the curved surface to determine the length. Is there a better way or proper way to measure these linings?

11 inch is a diameter not a length
  • Well, I guess it's never too late to learn something new! I had thought that it was the lining itself that was the long measurement when it came to brake shoes. Thanks for clearing this up!

A quick check might be to draw an 11 inch circle on a piece of paper and lay the shoes on it.

I'd say use a quarter to simulate the anchor pin separating the curved ends and the shoes should fit the circle closely with maybe a couple of inches between them at the notched end where the adjuster goes.

Go to a NAPA STORE and ask for EIS #55. They will change that make and number to the brand they carry. Walt.
