I knew there were alot of cars made and went out of business. But there were more cars listed under the letter A than the total of all the cars I imagined were made.
Very interesting. Thanks. Lee
All the cars added up to 1653 cars that were manufactured and went out of business.0 -
A lot of those in the list only were in production for a year or two with less than 100, probably 50, made.

Before Hudson Motors Co. existed there was another company that made Hudsons in 1901 and 1902. The two companies were not associated in any way.
Alot of car history here.

I visited the Henry Ford Museum about 20 years ago and they had what I would describe as sort of an automobile company family tree. As I recall, it showed all of the companies and whether they had been bought out, merged with other companies or just died out.
I wonder if it's still there...0 -
Since the 1903 Northern is not listed, what does that make it? Northern's were built by Oldsmobile and badged for the rich industrialist who owned the company. We have a very nice example near my home.0

That list is about 50% complete. There's 1600 and change manufacturers listed, which is slightly more than half of known US auto manufacturers. Northern's amongst many others are not represented.
However, as Alex pointed out, many of those companies made a few thousand in total production down to a handful.0 -
WOW! 1600 is only 1/2 the total cars manufactured. I wonder if a complete list does exist. I was amazed when I saw this list. It would be neat to see a complete list with accompaning pictures. Even better in book form.

I have ridden in the only known Geronimo car known to exist. They were built in Enid, Oklahoma. That particular car is located there. It's weird, sitting in a car that is the only one known to exist of a make. Beautiful touring car!0

Hudson 1901-1902 - Hudson, Michigan. A light steamer with a vertical 2-cylinder, single chain drive and tiller steering.
I seem to remember there was also an Essex - checked the orphan list and it shows a 1906 Essex. Also no relation to the later Hudson line - think it was made in Essex (or at least Essex County) Mass.
A great source for these cars is the Krause "Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942", which is available thru Amazon.com - but the price is $695 for a new copy or $345 for a used copy. (Russ, you'd better insure the copies I gave you!!!!!!) There was also a companion volume covering 1947 to around 1975. There are others covering muscle cars, trucks, independent makes.
