Making our own batteries

My buddy and I are going to make our own batteries. He has a 1909 Excelsior motorcycle and I have my ’40 Super Six. The idea is to use current state of the art battery designs to make original looking and better performing 6V batteries. The battery is for the Hudson.

One issue we have is that we don’t know what the original batteries used for the outer shell. Anyone know or know where I can find out?

  • The origional battery shells that 95% of all US made auto batteries used at that time was a material called hard rubber. it was very similar to a type of hard plastic or bakelite. This was also the material used for gear shift knobs and other misc parts.. It was made chiefly by the American Hard Rubber Company of Butler, New Jersey. 'Soft" rubber from tires was reclaimed and revulcanized in the process. Steel belts today make this processing obsolete. A few folks may remember the 'Ace" brand of hair comb . This was about the highest profile product they made. In the early seventies they moved to Arkansas where they became the Amerace Corporation . Don't know if they exist anymore or not. I think Ace combs are still around but I'm not sure of the Amerace Corporation. They also made caster wheels and many more non auto related components.

You are a wealth of information! How did you know this? That's impressive.
  • Russell, Thats my problem. If it was important I would have forgotten it. My brain has file cabinets full of junk like that. LOL.

You could try purchasing a hard rubber battery "shell" from someone like Antique Auto Battery company http://www.antiqueautobattery.com/

I agree, Hudzilla is sort of our own Hudipedia. You pointed me in the direction I needed.

Might buy a case or might cast it myself if I can find a good original to use to make a mold.

Almost no spare time with two toddlers underfoot and helping me. Decided to keep the 6 volt system and looking at ways to make it more reliable. At the same time this is something that I can build myself to add to the car.
