Storage for classic cars?

I keep mine in one of those u-store-it places (Storage America, to be precise) in my area. They only ask that I keep my gas tank full to minimize the amount of gasoline fumes. I got a 10' x 20' unit and -- though it's a tight squeeze -- I can fit my Terraplane in, plus a line of 20" deep, 8 ft. high heavy duty storage shelves (along one side) where I keep a LOT of junk.
Other options are to contact your local AACA and see where other people store their cars. For example, in the Washington DC area (suburban Virginia to be exact) there is a high-rise apartment building that rents out spaces in the enclosed garage for antique cars, at a reasonable rate. A lot of guys keep their cars there, and (as far as I know) no one has encountered and problems.
Another good idea is storage in the garages of private homes, especially one-car owner families, such as elderly people. You might advertise in your local paper or Craigslist for a space. If there is a senior citizens center (where older people come for activities) you might ask to post a flyer on the bulletin board, seeking a parking space in someone's garage.0 -
Thanks for the reply! I checked out a local place as well, Uncle Bob's Self Storage in Houston, and found that they're SUPER helpful. They have a deal where your first month is free and you can name your own price for storage during the next month.
I don't think I've ever heard of a public storage facility doing a "Name Your Own Price" promotion, so that was really awesome. The prices are fair as well, so I think I'll probably go with that. AND, the spaces are climate controlled - which is what sold me.
Thanks for your input, Jon--it convinced me to get a place. I don't really like hassling people (I'd feel awkward renting someone else's garage), so Uncle Bob's Self Storage is the way to go.
If anyone is also looking for that info, head over to Uncle Bob's Self Storage (link attached). As for first impressions, it looks like a winner.0 -
The outlet is a good idea, but unfortunately -- if my storage unit is any indication -- they happen to be on timers. That means that, when you visit your car, you can set UP the battery minder. But only if and when someone in your "block" of storage units visits their unit and turns on the master timer -- will your battery minder get any juice. And then, for only a few minutes at a time.0

Welcome to the BBS... Houston... neat. Several years ago, I helped my friend on his 2nd of 3 trips clean out a u store it place (three units) in south Houston, where we moved out two hudsons and lots of parts. One of those situations where the owner passed on but had no one to claim the storage. Highest bidder sale.0
